My little guy is 17 years old and was diagnosed around 2 months ago with stage 2 kidney disease. We had swapped him over to Hills prescription wet and dry food and he had no issues eating the food. He had a cold/infection that was treated with antibiotics, but recovered from that a few weeks ago too.
Our problem is his latest check up was on Saturday and he seems to be going downhill quickly and my husband and I are at a loss. Before the appointment he was acting normal if maybe a little sluggish. Even then, it was the first really hot week in our area and he always gets this way in the summer with his long hair until we cut it.
At the check up his blood work showed he was anemic and he was put back on Varenzin which he's been on and off for around 6 months. They said he seemed to be struggling to breath and gave him some oxygen and a steroid shot and took an X-ray but didn't see anything.
He ate a little the Saturday afternoon, but since then the only thing I've been able to get him to eat are some lickable puree sticks and he's drinking a lot more water and has been very lethargic. I took him back to the vet yesterday (Monday) and they gave him some electrolytes and told us to continue monitoring.
We already have a follow up for Saturday and we are trying to brace ourselves for the worst, but we would appreciate any guidance. My main question would be how can I get him eating a little more, but if there is any other advice or feedback anyone has that can help in any way it would be appreciated.
