Remote control borrowing poltergeist

This is too weird. My elderly mother phoned me about an hour ago. She was very shaken by what had occurred and I cannot reasonably explain how this happened.

A few days ago my mother called me and said she had misplaced her television remote control and could I come over to her house to look for it. She had combed the house top to bottom and she told me she had used it less than an hour before it went missing.

I went to her house only a few miles away and I too searched the house top to bottom, looking under the couch, under the bed and all other furniture, removing cushions, looking in cabinets, every flat surface, even looking in the refrigerator. To be clear I was extremely thorough. Finally I said the heck with it and went to the cable store and got her a new remote.

Fast forward to this morning. As I previously said my mother phoned me very shaken and kind of scared. She had fallen asleep on the couch last evening and when she awoke both the new remote and the missing remote were sitting on the coffee table side by side. That remote was not on that table when I searched a few days before nor when I went to her home a couple days after that for dinner.

My mom is of sound mind and so am I. I cannot for the life of me explain this.

Ball Lightning?

I was digging through some old files , found this and thought I would share. This occurred in September of 2007 and I wrote this summary the day after just because it was so odd.

September 27, 2007

Last night my son Tyler and I were sitting in my walkout basement watching TV when a loud explosion made us turn our heads toward the 9ft glass basement doors. I say explosion but what it really was, was a series of explosions. The first got our attention and then 5 to 6 more erupted all in a span of about 3 seconds. It looked like muzzle flashes from various sized cannon placed not 15ft from the door and another 10ft from where we sat on the couch. The bursts of light were perfectly rounded and varied in size from a basketball to softball and appeared like a grape cluster from ground level to about chest high.  I have had lightning strike the ground so close there was no time lapse between the strike and the resulting thunderclap. It is loud and makes you jump out of your skin. This was different. The sound of this “Thunder” was more akin to a larger than normal shotgun blast, say a “6 gauge” if one existed. Or successive detonations of bomb- like fireworks, at point blank distance, from a community 4th of July display.

The storm itself was unusually odd. There was little to no wind, a fair amount of rain and all the lightning was occurring cloud-to-cloud and very, very bright.  I saw no ground strikes when, after the lightning explosions, I opened the door to peer out into the periodically well-lit night. I am normally not too concerned about walking out to the car or garage during a storm but something about this one did not allow me to do more than open the door halfway and poke my head out for a half a minute. I was uneasy and I felt that this storm was more unpredictable than most.

I shut the door and Tyler and I discussed what had occurred. After about 30 minutes, the storm had moved on enough that I decided to see if I could find any sign of what we had witnessed. I grabbed a large spotlight type flashlight and went outside. On the driveway exactly where the “lightning” had flashed I found 3 ‘burns” in the asphalt. The tar and such looks as if it is melted and is smooth where the surrounding area is porous and rough. The largest of the three is about softball size and the other two are perhaps a third of that size. All three are irregular. I’m not exactly sure what we were fortunate enough to witness but I know I will never forget that particular storm.
