The Crane Wife is definitely one of my favorite albums ever as far as emotional flow and contrast of the songs from beginning to end. Learning about the stories within the album have always been interesting. Perhaps you can enlighten me as to why only a few songs have to do with the Japanese folk tale, “The Crane Wife”.
It seems like we are seamlessly weaving into a different universe between tracks with other songs, referencing themes in “The Tempest” by Shakespeare. The war came, blood is still worn on the ground, and Shankill butchers being bad and stuff. Then we merge back into the Crane Wife story.
I’m curious. How do you interpret this story as a concept album as you listen from beginning to end? Is it mainly the Shakespearean romance that ties the story together? Maybe it’s just meant to be a multi-concept album? I imagine it might be a little different for everyone.
