M3 Max MacBook Pro vs Threadripper 7980X

I have an M3 Max MacBook Pro, and I bought the Threadripper 7980X with 64 cores because I thought it'd be able to run parallel code faster than the laptop which only has 16 cores. However, currently the MacBook is outperforming the Threadripper on both single-core and parallel performance. Now, I currently only have 32GB of RAM for my Threadripper (whereas I have 128GB RAM on my MacBook) so that may be a bottleneck. But before I fork out £2k ($2.8k) on more RAM, I wanted to sense check that this will actually outperform the MacBook? Or, should I sell the Threadripper and get the M5 Max instead?

I'm basically generating features with polars and running LightGBM ML models in parallel if anyone is curious about what I'm trying to do.

I greatly appreciate any advice!

RAM: bandwidth vs capacity for parallelism

Hi there,

I bought a custom build with a Threadripper 7980X to accelerate my workflow by enabling me to run code in parallel at swifter speeds. At the moment, I only have 32GB of RAM (RDIMM DDR5 4800mhz). Capacity is definitely a bottleneck currently as it consumes 35% memory just running Firefox, but I'm wondering whether it'd be better to optimise for bandwidth or total capacity. Should I get 3 more of the same 4800mhz sticks for increased bandwidth, or should I just buy 1 singular 128GB stick of RAM with 6400mhz speeds? I have a Gigabyte Aero D motherboard by the way.

Thanks in advance!

Psychological perspective on escaping the manosphere

There's an interesting body of research on how singlehood correlates with poor mental health and misogynistic attitudes in young men, and how the manosphere has measurably shifted from relatively benign self-improvement content towards more extreme subsets like inceldom over time. The largest study on incels to date, commissioned by the UK Commission for Countering Extremism, found over a third meet criteria for both depression and anxiety simultaneously, with 42% self-identifying as people of colour and around a third scoring above the autism referral threshold.

I came across an interview that touches on this from a personal perspective and quotes some of this research if anyone's interested. Happy to discuss the underlying findings here too.
