I can't seem to build armies fast and easy. At first the barons occupy most of the resources and winter always keeps my food dried up :/

The taxes cause my town ratings to decline and I can't seem to get trade routes open till sometime later until it's too late.

Mercenaries aren't very useful, they break easily and the city militia isn't enough.

Any suggestions on how to contest the barons?
