Transcrybe 3.0 – Real-time transcription and translation of any audio on your Mac (now more Mac-assed than ever!)

Hey everybody! You may remember me posting on here a couple years ago to share a little utility I built called Subtitle Me to add live-translated subtitles to presentations at my bilingual developer meetup Swift Kansai in Osaka.

Or you may remember when I posted last year about how I had renamed it to Transcrybe, launched it on the App Store, and switched it to use Whisper.

Well I've been busy! And I just launched Transcrybe 3.0, and figured it was time to give you all an update.

Transcrybe is still a macOS menu bar app that's built for the times you need audio translated instantaneously. Think live presentations to multilingual audiences, streaming video, meetings, or classrooms with bilingual kids.

The app is relentlessly focused on solving this one problem: live translated audio. If you have an audio file you want transcribed, go check out MacWhisper, it's great. If you want to translate text, ChatGPT or Google Translate are great. But if you have live audio, Transcrybe is the better fit.

Since I was last here:

  • Transcrybe now uses a combination of NVIDIA Parakeet, Whisper, and macOS's built-in Speech Analyzer framework. It intelligently chooses the best model to use based on the language, hardware, and OS, so you get live-translation with the best possible accuracy.
  • The app has been completely rewritten from SwiftUI to AppKit, which has improved reliability, accessibility, and Mac-assedness.
  • The app now supports translation to multiple languages simultaneously in different windows.
  • The app supports telling it your custom vocabulary ahead of time so it can translate brand names, technical terms, etc. more accurately.

The app is available on both the Mac App Store and as a direct download from the app's website. It's got a trial mode, followed by a $29.99 one-time lifetime unlock. I'm running a 30% off promotion until July 10 to celebrate the 3.0 launch, which you can access at the top of the website until it ends.

Would love your thoughts, feedback, feature ideas, or just to know if you find it useful!

[Mac] [Transcrybe] [$29.99 -> $20.99] [Live-translated subtitles for any audio - fast, on-device, and completely private]

Creator of Transcrybe here! Transcrybe is a 100% on-device live translation app. It intelligently chooses between Parakeet, Whisper, and macOS's built-in transcription libraries based on language, hardware, and OS, to give you the best transcription accuracy possible. Then it translates text on-device into up to 20 languages using Apple's built-in Translation framework.

I originally built it for giving presentations to a multilingual audience at the developer meetup I run in Osaka, Japan. But people are also using it for language learning, classroom accessibility, and online meetings.

I just finished a big update (3.0!) with a UI update, custom vocabulary support, and more, and am running a 30% discount until July 10. Click on the link at the top of the page to get the discount for either the direct download or Mac App Store version.

And let me know if you have any feedback on the app! Thanks!

How to direct link to Nihongo word entries, create clippings automatically, photo lookup, etc.

I just updated the Nihongo FAQ with a new section documenting the links the app supports. You can use this in your own Shortcuts or automations, or if you're developing another app, you are free to link to Nihongo dictionary entries from your app (it will fall back to a website with a link to install the app if the user doesn't have it).

There are also links that will open the app and create a clipping with supplied text automatically, or open the app straight to the camera too!

If you come up with anything cool, share it here. 🙂

Nihongo gets improved search and huge kanji updates in version 1.34 update

Hey all, latest update is out! It's been a long-time coming. The highlights are really two things:

First, a feature a lot of people have requested, the ability to paste a full sentence into the search field, and then have it show you search results of all the words in the sentence. Just a quality-of-life thing, but hopefully will save you all some time.

The second one is a big one for me personally - the final, polished release of the kanji breakdown/origin feature. I released the first version last year, but there were pieces that remained unpolished. At the time, I made it my goal to hand-review the first 1000 kanji to make sure there were no gaps, missing elements, etc. It was a huge endeavor, and I needed to take a break before taking a crack at the second half. But that's done now. So, all 2136 Joyo kanji are now reviewed and cleaned up, with rich breakdowns of every one of them. If you see any problems, please let me know!

It's honestly been a fascinating process for me to dive into the history of kanji, and try to figure out how to present the history of these characters in a way that is meaningful to learners, without any linguistic expertise. I'm really proud of how it turned out!

Anyway, full release notes are here: https://blog.nihongo-app.com/nihongo-1-34-release-notes/

And you can download the latest version here (it'll roll out automatically over the next week): https://apps.apple.com/app/nihongo-modern-japanese-dictionary/id881697245
