Had the most unforgettable girls' night out at a yakiniku restaurant with a wild name—"SEX MACHINE"!! 😂🍖

Located near Dotonbori, this hidden gem has been rocking since 1988.

The retro vibes inside were amazing! ✨
The "Special Machine Set" was absolutely massive, and one bite of their signature "Black Wagyu Dynamite Loin" had us hooked! 🤤🥢

If you want a unique and delicious night out in Osaka, you've gotta check this place out!

Taxi early morning availability?

Hi everyone! Last half of our short 9 day trip will be spent in Osaka. We are flying out of Narita. Instead of heading back to Tokyo etc we were thinking about flying out of Osaka and to Narita instead giving us about 6-7hrs for our flight back home. Curious tho if it is easy to find a taxi/Uber at 4AM 😬. Flight out is 7AM.

What are we missing?

こんばんは
( ^∀^)

I’m traveling with my teenage son (15) in Japan for six weeks (Tokyo 16d, Osaka 5d, Kyoto 5d, Onomichi 2d, Hiroshima 2d, Nagasaki 4d, Sapporo 3d). We have been planning this trip for several months but we never really nailed down what to do in Osaka. We were under the impression it would be like Tokyo and we could endlessly explore and never run out of stuff to do.

It’s our second day here and we are… underwhelmed? I’m not sure if it is because we are coming off of 14 days in Tokyo (which is one of the best places ever) where we never ran out of things to do and see or if it is just not our vibe.

I’m feeling like we must be missing something. We did go to a delightful cat cafe today, but other than that, mostly things are just… bland. Most places are closed, streets are empty, we obviously aren’t going out drinking, so it seems this just isn’t the place for us?

I love exploring and finding hidden gems, I’m generally easy to please but with so many places closed there’s not much to see or do. Does it only wake up at night? My son loves anime and history, and we both love animals and kawaii things. In Tokyo it was just easy to always find something around the corner. We even had such a hard time finding lunch today that we walked for an hour and settled on a McDonald’s 😹 (due to things being closed or not serving any vegetarian options because my son is vegetarian).

I wanted this to be the most epic trip for us, a once in a lifetime experience. But now all I want is to go back to Tokyo and I’m dreading going to the other places, thinking they may also not be the vibe we are looking for.

We aren’t the type to just check things off a list. We enjoy connecting with local culture and finding off the beaten path restaurants and experiences. (Highlights from Tokyo are going to the Giants game, visiting a pig cafe, the Tama Zoo, and Aqua Park aquarium. In addition to just exploring the streets and walking into random shops with anime figures and kawaii things.)

Please help! Dying for suggestions!!! We want to love it!

Edited to Add-
*We are planning on:
—Aquarium
—Minoh Falls
—Mipig Cafe (same one we went to in Tokyo and loved)
—TeamLab Botanical Gardens
—Pokémon Center
—And I have a tattoo appointment 😹

Just really want to spend our days wandering into fun little shops and such. Why is everything closed 😭 Also, I know enough Japanese to get around so I’m not worried about that piece.

Edited again: We looove Pokémon too!

What was your favorite purchase in Osaka that you still use today?

Not necessarily the most expensive thing you bought, but something that’s actually become part of your everyday life. It could be clothing, kitchen items, stationery, skincare, snacks you keep importing, or anything else that was worth bringing home.

My main reason for planning my upcoming Kansai trip just fell apart.

Hoping for everyone's kind consideration as I share some pre-departure disappointment a few weeks before my upcoming trip.

Earlier this year, it was announced that Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring: Dutch masterpieces of the 17th century will be held in Nakanoshima Museum of Art this August 21 to September 27, 2026. Coming from a weak passport country, I felt that this would finally be my chance to see the Vermeer paintings without flying all the way to the Netherlands. I was super excited for this exhibit, so instead planning a trip to somewhere that's entirely new to me like Aomori or Okinawa, I planned for this Kansai trip instead.

So as early as January, I sorted out my annual leave dates at work, flights, accommodations, and other bookings. Pretty much every Friday, I would check the official event Instagram account and their website for any and all updates.

To be honest, I haven't looked forward to anything in a long time. I've been so afraid of making big future plans after some personal trauma, wherein those plans I invested so much time, money, and effort on just crashed and burned spectacularly. But over the first half of the year, I became so excited for the exhibit and this entire trip, my itinerary was pretty much complete last May. And I was just counting down to the ticket sales dates.

Then I got the devastating news earlier that the options for first-come, first-served sales for the general sales periods, as well as the same-day purchase tickets at NAKKA were discontinued (https://vermeer2026.exhibit.jp/tickets/). So just like that, the only feasible options for a tourist like me were scrapped.

Yes, I feel glad knowing that the exhibit already has such overwhelming support from the first round of bookings alone. I know it will be a huge success. However, I still feel disappointed knowing that I can't join the upcoming ticket lottery because I don't fulfill the requirements to make a Ticket Pia account.

Also, the oufuku hagaki (往復はがき) being considered by the organizers might not even be an option. My country's postal service is so inefficient, that a postcard I sent from Japan took more than 6 months to reach the recipient address in my country. I can't even imagine how long the round-trip for the postcard application would take!!! And using services like DHL just to gamble a chance at winning an event ticket might not even be feasible for my case as my entry will be coming from outside Japan.

Yes, this will be my third time visiting Osaka and Kyoto. I'll also be going to other places within Kansai that are completely new to me. I finally get to go take that long overdue trip off the beaten path to maximize that Kansai Wide Area Pass. I finally have dealt with the demons that kept me from enjoying even the idea of using the communal same-sex onsen in a ryokan. But I am still reeling in from the disappointment and the frustration from the news that when I get to Osaka, the upcoming Vermeer Exhibit will be so near, yet so far to me.

The only thing I can wish for as a consolation is that the merch from the event can still be purchased at NAKKA even without a ticket to the Vermeer Exhibit. 🥲

check my very loose 7 day itinerary in and around osaka

I'm kinda having trouble deciding the order in which I do things when I arrive in Osaka (this will be my 2nd trip so far), so please give me recs and stuff (btw, I'll be in Osaka from Jul 17-24).

July 17: Arrive at like 7 pm and just go to a hotel and crash; maybe go to Dotonbori to shop by myself if I can catch the train.

July 18-19: do sum stuff in Osaka (Kuromon Market, Sumiyoshi Taisha, Hozenji Yokocho, etc.)

July 20-21: 2 daytrips in Kyoto (Gion, a few temples, omakase or something [might need some omakase recs])

July 22: Mt. Koyasan (having some real trouble finding food to eat there). [or kobe since ive never been]

July 23: free day, maybe shop around for souvenirs or go somewhere.

July 24: go home

Again kinda loose but I'm not sure where to go in Osaka since I already visited places like Dotonbori, Shinsekai, and the castle. Also, I'm thinking of switching Mt. Koyasan for Kobe. Y'all think that's a good idea?

Do I need to prebook the Haruka train for this sunday afternoon ?

My daughter and I fly into KIX on Sunday at 1pm. Would you think I need to pre-book seats on the Haruka to Kyoto or do you think it will be quiet enough not to worry about doing it in advance ?

It's our first first time in Japan and we need to out of the airport but also sort out IC cards, collect Pocket Wifi and whilst I don't want to get into a panic if the time is tight I equally don't want to be sitting around for a long time !!

Thanks in advance

Local from Osaka

Hi everyone!
I was born and raised in Japan, and I currently live in Osaka.
If you’re curious about daily life, culture, food, transportation, language, safety, or anything else about Osaka or Japan, feel free to ask!
I’ll do my best to answer honestly from a local’s perspective🙌
My English isn’t that great, so I use a translation app here and there. Thanks!

Don't forget to buy some local food to take home..

No idea if they are locally made but at least they are Osaka local things , Hanshin Tigers and Katsuoji Temple.

Good souvenirs to take home.

Osaka Train Station

Long exposure shot I took in Osaka, Japan. I was lucky that the guy on the left stood still. I also used high contrasting colors in editing. What do you think?

Wagyu in Osaka and Kobe beef in Kobe advise

Traveling to Osaka area in late August/early September and would like Wagyu in Osaka and Kobe beef in Kobe advise, as going with 2 teens and one not a big fan of seafood.

Can I get some recommendations for places to have beef in Osaka and Kobe that are welcoming for tourists, don't speak Japanese, and are not a rip-off? TIA

Tigers tickets

Hi everyone, visiting Osaka and just realized there’s a game tonight. I tried to get tickets online but without luck, am I doing something wrong? Can I simply get them at the stadium? Or is there a second hand market? Thanks!

Where to watch Norway vs Brazil?

Norwegian solo traveler going to Osaka here. Norway plays Brazil on Monday July 6 at 05:00 Japan time, and I’d love to watch it with other Norwegians / football fans.

Not really looking to stay out drinking all night, more like wake up early and watch somewhere. Any places likely to show it, or anyone planning to watch?

Tuesen takk!

Travelling to Osaka for 6 weeks

I’ll be staying near awaza park in Osaka for 6 weeks. It’s my first solo trip out of county and first trip to Japan. I’ve just gone through a break up with my ex-wife of 6 years and want to knock off some bucket list items. Other than shrines I don’t really have any plans just going with the flow and booking smaller things to try

Where to look/find car meet ups.

I will be travelling to Osaka in October this year. I love car photography and I'm not trying to go to a super secret underground meet. I just want to meet and photograph the general car community. If anyone could give me locations or information that would be amazing, Thank you.
