Raising the minimum wage is NOT idiotic...
The argument people use for not raising the minimum wage doesn't make sense to me.
They are saying if you raise the miminum wage to reflect the current cost of living you will force employers to fire more workers. In order to maintain jobs they must allow employers to keep paying people below the standard of living.
So...more workers with inadequate amount of pay vs less workers making adequate amount of pay.
The pay raise is framed as bad for the workers when it's really bad for the companies. If companies can't get a lot of workers to do the same job for less money then they can't grow as large as they are. If they aren't so large this leaves room for other companies to grow and hire their own employees. Thus seems like one of the ways we should be regulating the size of these huge companies that become so powerful they become the regulators and governors of society.
But this also unfairly shifts the problem of the rising costs of living into the worker. They are basically saying that the worker must absorb the pitfalls of this situation when they are not the cause of the situation. Who or what is responsible for the current rise in costs of living? I would argue a conglomerate of institutions, businesses, and industries- none of which involve the worker. But this argument frames and demonizes the worker for asking for FAIR PAY. Meanwhile the people causing the problem ls get richer.
