Pirate King! by Frankie Bu Card Game Review

I won a board/card game event in our office and got to choose a game as a prize. I ended up picking Pirate King! by Frankie Bu because it was one of the few that worked with just 2 players since most of the other choices left needed 3 or more.

Tried it first with my workmates (3 players) and we genuinely had a great time. Then I brought it home and played it with my partner as a 2-player game and it still worked really well. I’m honestly surprised by how much game is packed into such a small box.

The mechanics felt like a mix of The Vale of Eternity + Century: Spice Road + Flip 7 in a compact and easy-to-teach package. Fast turns, fun decisions, and enough interaction to stay engaging without becoming stressful.

It’s now part of my personal gateway game recommendations because both gamers and non-gamers around me enjoyed it pretty quickly.

If you’re looking for a light card game that works well at 2 players but can still scale up nicely, you might want to check this one out too.

Azul, is this the best gateway board game?

Just finished a game on BGA and wanted to share how the tiles somehow went in my favor and helped me complete three color sets.

I’ve been playing this ever since my brother bought it, and it’s always my go-to game whenever I feel bored. I like how easy it is to learn, and after around 3 rounds, you can already tell if you’re going to win or lose.

I’ve never reached 500 ELO points yet, but honestly I’m not aiming for it. Playing board games is supposed to help me relax and not be too competitive (it depends). At my current ELO level, hate drafting is pretty much part of everyone’s strategy... and yeah, I do it too.

Just wanted to share how much I enjoy this game and how I keep recommending it to friends I come across with.

DNUP Card Game

I saw this card game called DNUP on Board Game Arena since it was featured on the homepage. I honestly didn’t expect to enjoy it this much. It’s simple to learn, but the strategy gets really interesting depending on your cards and timing.

What I like is that you can never really relax, even if your opponent only has 1 card left while you still have 5 or more. Comebacks feel very possible.

Since the game seems pretty new, I’m curious if other people here also enjoy it. Do you have any tips or strategies? I find it easier to plan ahead in 1v1 compared to playing with 3–5 players, but I’m still learning as I go.
