Casino Royale 1967 makes Diamonds are Forever look like Casino Royale 2006 by comparison
I was obsessed with James Bond as a kid but I never got around to watching CR 1967. Recently I decided to give them both a watch. Casino Royale 1967 might be the worst film in the series. It's such a strange mess that feels like a bunch of cut scenes from different movies stitched together. It's a movie that feels like it should have stayed in development hell. The sets are amazing but to be honest a lot of the comedy seems to be simply tied to the referential nature of it. I think fans of this movie view it as akin to the Yellow Submarine movie the Beatles made but to me this has more in common with something like epic movie or superhero movie.
I barely laughed during the movie. I don't think it was very funny and that seems to be the general consensus among those who watched it. Niven might be the weakest Bond and while that may be by design it made me wish I was watching a different Bond. It's a shame cause there's hints of a good Bond there but then it's nothing. The movie's so scattered that it feels like nothing amounts to anything.
The scenes that made me laugh are when Niven hit the irish guy with the ball and when Dr Noah escaped being shot only to get shot at again. The climax with all the random shit simultaneously and everyone dying felt like they were giving up. The ending didn't feel quirky it felt derivative and lazy of other absurdist films of its era. Diamonds are forever may fail as a sequel to OHMSS but it's a well structured camp comedy that actually is a cohesive story. Wint and Kidd are excellent. Connery is on top form. Gray is a treat to watch. It's a very silly lazy Sunday movie whereas I can't imagine what would incentivize me to watch Casino Royale 1967 again.
Spoiler... Technically though it predates No Time to die as the first film to give Bond a daughter and have the villain kill him.
Fargo series alignment chart
Lawful Good: Gloria Burgle is a classic saint. She goes out of her way to help whoever she can. She respects her husband even after the divorce. She is just a very moral person.
Neutral Good: Molly Solverson is good person but she is frustrated and impatient about the injustices of the world. This spurs her to make impulsive and sometimes illegal choices like breaking into Lester's house. It also leads her to have lapses in empathy like when Mrs. Nygaard 2 dies.
Chaotic Good: Dot is a rebel. She grew up being groomed and abused by a monster but chose to risk it all by trying to escape. She's very fun loving but childish.
Lawful Neutral: Danish Graves is just the arm of Lorraine. Still he shows loyalty and doesn't seem to be motivated by greed rather he comes off as someone who needs direction.
True Neutral: Not too much goes on in Ed Blumquists' head. He's a lovable oaf who just assumes his wife wants what he wants because that's how couples operate. He's simple minded and goes with the flow.
Chaotic Neutral: Peggy Blumquist is crazy. She's not malicious to the extent of Lester but she is really self centered and detached from reality. She feels trapped and yearns for anything that makes her feel like she has control.
Lawful Evil: Lorraine Lyon is a loan shark who destroys lives. She looks moral compared to Roy but she is still a self serving parasite.
Neutral Evil: V.M. Varga is greed personified. He doesn't even indulge in the excesses of his fortune, he just likes hoarding it.
Chaotic Evil: Lorne Malvo does evil simply for the sake of it. Evil itself is its own reward for him. He goes out of his way to cause chaos wherever he goes.
James Bond 007 movies alignment chart
Lawful Good: The Spy who loved me: The perfect blend of escapist fantasy and cold war espionage. The best distillation of the series.
Neutral Good: Dr. No: The original. The movie in which all the other films are built on. The perfect introduction to Bond's world. Very bare bones but really earnest and well done.
Chaotic Good: Casino Royale: A character story that deviates from some of the tropes of the series while building on others. A brilliant reinvention!
Lawful Neutral: For your eyes only: A spy thriller with a focus on subversive writing. Unfortunately it's hindered by its devotion to the series trappings. Perfectly acceptable albeit unremarkable.
True Neutral: Tomorrow never dies: The most meat and potatoes Bond film ever. That's okay. I like meat and potatoes.
Chaotic Neutral: License to Kill: A gritty revenge flick. With exploding heads and a human meat grinder it almost loses its identity as a Bond film.
Lawful Evil: Die another Day: Hasn't James Bond always been stupid? Look it's Bond surfing on a CGI tsunami.
Neutral Evil: Diamonds are Forever: What you wanted a payoff to Tracy Bonds death? F**ck you! You'll get Blofeld in drag and you'll like it!
Chaotic Evil: Spectre: A lethargic film nobody wanted to make that aggrandizes itself while damaging its predecessors. Every horrible thing that has ever happened to Bond is because Blofeld's dad taught him to ski. IsN't ThAt So CoOl?!
