New hermit crab owner.

I have a 40 gallon tank with 8 inches of substrate and a glass top. I got an 18.5 x8.5 inch tikaton heating pad on the back of the tank set to like 95 degrees but I can’t seem to get the tank above 75. The house has AC set to 71 degrees. I recently put diy cardboard with tin foil on the sides but it doesn’t seem to have made any difference.

Do I need an under tank heater? I read those can be dangerous. Do I need another heating pad for one of the sides?

I’m traveling with the fam next month for 2 weeks and looking for something fun to do on planes and at night once the kids go to bed. I am not tech savvy
