De-recognition of Palestine appears to be in the works

Slovenia is reversing course on Palestine.

After recognizing Palestinian statehood in 2024 under PM Robert Golob and becoming one of the EU’s most outspoken pro-Palestinian states, new PM Janez Janša sworn in May 2026 has moved fast to undo that legacy.

Key facts:

2024–2026 (Golob era): Slovenia recognized Palestine, banned arms trade with Israel (first EU state to do so), sanctioned Netanyahu and far-right ministers Ben-Gvir and Smotrich, banned settlement imports, and boycotted Eurovision over Israel’s participation.

June 2026 (Janša takes over): Within an hour of taking office, he had the Palestinian flag removed from the government building. He called the 2024 recognition “crazy” and “in violation of Slovenian law.” TVP World

Janša confirmed his government will freeze the recognition of Palestine a condition his coalition partners agreed to unanimously. Eualive

Embassy move: He also plans to relocate Slovenia’s embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, which would make it the first EU country to do so. Eualive

Israel’s response: FM Gideon Sa’ar announced Israel will open its first resident embassy in Ljubljana Eualive (previously handled from Vienna).

Pushback: President Nataša Pirc Musar raised the Palestinian flag at her own palace days later, accusing Israel of genocide.

Side note: Reports have surfaced alleged contacts between Janša and Israeli intelligence firm Black Cube around the election, adding scrutiny to the timing.
