Thread for shopping / styling help

Graduated bride here who loves scrolling / shopping / making Polyvore-style outfit boards, haha. If anyone is shopping for something specific or wants help styling a piece they own, feel free to comment with details like budget / vibe / style preferences and I would love to help.

I see a ton of brides posting here for style advice so figured I'd offer, but mods feel free to remove if deemed off-topic! This could also be an idea for a recurring weekly thread in the sub since so many brides here have great taste and I love seeing everyone's crowdsourced ideas.

Solo getaway in late October ~$1K/night: Enchantment Sedona vs. Rosewood Mandarina?

I (30/F) have a week off work in late October and I'm looking to do a solo weekday getaway (likely Monday through Thursday/Friday):

  • Just me so hotel budget is roughly ~$1K/night
  • I prioritize sense of place and nice design/hard product, wellness/fitness offerings, and being able to stay on property for the majority of the time
  • I'll be in Napa with my husband the weekend prior so will be flying from SFO and then need to end back in NYC where we live, so considering places that either break up the flight or are generally equidistant from both cities

My lovely TA pulled a few properties/destination ideas for me and Enchantment in Sedona and Rosewood Mandarina both caught my eye.

  • Rosewood Mandarina: Prefer their rooms and the promo they're running makes it very attractive to the wallet (would get 4 nights here). Downside is it's shoulder season so may get a few P.M. showers. Heard service is hit or miss due to it being a newer property. A bit of a farther flight from both SFO/NYC.
  • Enchantment: Room is deeply whatever to me, but being right in the middle of Red Rocks feels very special. Lots of activities/fitness options + Mii Amo spa access is nice. Would stay 3 nights instead of 4.

Read a few reviews on here from couples/young families but curious if people have thoughts on either for a solo getaway. Also open to other suggestions. Sensei Lanai was also appealing but flight back to NYC is a bit gnarly so will have to table for a couple's trip.

Thanks in advance!

Dress cleaning cost?

Looking into getting my dresses cleaned post-wedding and wondering if folks could share details of quotes they've gotten?

I took my gowns to Jeeves in NYC and this is what they quoted me:

  • Ceremony gown: $1,875
    • Silk shantung full A-line gown with city grime under train and at hem from ballroom bustle
  • Second look: $1,787.50
    • Satin column gown with lace applique and mesh draped overlay; wore this dancing late into the night at our after party (and also sat on a chicken wing lol)

My brain is still operating on wedding monopoly money vibes so not sure if these are fair/competitive quotes or not.

Cobblers for wedding shoe cleaning?

I have these Danielle Frankel Manolos that I stupidly wore with jeans for dance lessons and the denim transferred onto them <2 weeks out from my wedding.

https://preview.redd.it/n22urrdemd3h1.jpg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7bd76f14711ff634b61b09aa2e4e3c50c4a34c75

Any cobblers who can work magic on white satin? I reached out to Cobbler Shoe Spa but they don't work on satin and am waiting to hear back from Jim's Shoe Repair & Leather Spa.

Review: Making my custom reception gown with Monetre

Hi BBB! I designed a custom reception dress for my upcoming wedding entirely virtually with Monetre and wanted to share the process since I know many brides here consider going the bespoke route at some point of their dress shopping journey.

I had followed Monetre's work for a while because I love their sculptural draping, but I had never seen their pieces IRL. I decided it was worth reaching out for my second look as it's lower risk than ceremony.

TL;DR

  • Reached out March 9, saw a sketch March 15, dress was shipped from Ukraine on May 15 and it arrived in NYC on May 22.
  • Cost was €3,000 all-in (~$3,500 USD), including shipping.
  • Quality is great – fabric feels robust/high quality; lace is hand-placed; corseted bodice is functional with strong, supportive boning; interior band to keep strapless gown up.
  • It was made accurately to my measurements and height in heels, so no additional alterations are really needed!

Timeline

March 9 – I reached out inquiring if they did custom, with a high level overview of what I was interested in (5 inspiration links).

March 10 – They responded confirming that they did, asked a few follow up Qs about sizing, and got to work on a sketch.

March 15 – They provided a concept sketch, which pretty much encapsulated what I had initially described:

https://preview.redd.it/t3rab1whjx2h1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=bfc897aacbd8f182a8c9db0c576c83d47bd5fc09

March 15–18: Some back and forth making minor adjustments to design clarifying length (needed it to be danceable!), fabric material, production timelines, and cost.

  • They quoted me €3,000 (~$3,500 USD) all in, which I felt was more than fair considering it was in the realm of / even cheaper than some RTW options I had been eyeing (Iris Serban, Maria Lucia Hohan, Marmar Halim etc.) but I could have more creative control as it was a bespoke piece.

March 19: I paid 50% down as a deposit, and I proactively put together a more detailed Google Doc containing additional reference imagery/inspiration about key design points, my measurements/shipping info/deadline, wedding details, etc.

  • I wanted to bring in a touch of 'undoneness' taking cues from Dilara Findikoglu and Salih Balta without being too deconstructed.
  • I requested having it by May 18, leaving me plenty of buffer time in case of any hiccups.

April 24: They sent me a Google Drive with photos and videos of the initial draping and pattern development for feedback. This had shifted a bit from the original sketch to incorporate more of the new inspiration I had sent:

https://preview.redd.it/w3cgvru3lx2h1.jpg?width=964&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2beb36ebbf2ed183992b49852f6e77314ea31d01

May 11: The dress was near complete and ready for feedback! After reviewing the photos they sent, I requested changes to the back draping.

https://preview.redd.it/g9eeyemqlx2h1.jpg?width=960&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ff0bbecc8e1b5c0a047bcb9a949c4ac395bc2ae6

May 13: They sent updated photos of the reworked draping, I confirmed everything looked great and the dress was approved for shipment.

May 15–22: I paid the remaining balance and the dress made its way from Ukraine to NYC with no issues. The team provided a FedEx tracking number and it arrived on the 22nd!

  • This was a few days after my original May 18 deadline, but had I not requested changes to the draping, it likely would have came right when originally planned.

Final dress try-on & thoughts

I'm truly so thrilled with how this turned out. I'm very picky about construction and fabric quality (which made ceremony dress shopping a treacherous process, lol).

The dress bodice is a true corset so I need to be laced into it 18th-century-court-style and there's an interior band as well for support. Fabric is a synthetic satin but isn't overly shiny. It's got some weight to it but not so much that it's hard to move in or disruptive to dancing. It hits right at floor length in my heels so I could get it hemmed a touch shorter, but it also works at its current length.

The team was very communicative and addressed my feedback well; I didn't feel like there was a language barrier.

I think this process felt very streamlined because their design language is already in the realm of what I was after, so my #1 advice for brides looking into custom is to make sure the designer's style is already aligned. (I'm custom-making a short statement Juliet cap veil with a veil designer to wear with this and it was like pulling teeth trying to get them to understand I didn't want a traditional neat lace veil.)

  • NYC-specific asks: "Where to get ___ done?" / "Has anyone gone to ___?"
    • Please include a budget range instead of "affordable" if seeking recommendations—help us help you!
    • Any high-level questions ("Has anyone done ___ before?") should be directed to general subs like r/SkincareAddiction.
  • Reviews of specific providers, both good and bad

Standalone threads will continue to be removed and redirected here. There will be a new rule added, similar to the events & meetups rule.

Posting here instead of r/wedditNYC because the same vendors just spam themselves on every makeup thread... 🥴

Looking for separate hair & makeup artists for my rehearsal dinner on Friday, June 5. My makeup and hair artists aren't available the night before due to other commitments and I'm in a bit of a pinch now.

Aiming for a messy updo and more of a smoky night out look as opposed to traditional clean bridal glam. Very into Australian makeup style right now.

Here are makeup artists I've reached out to for a sense of work I like:

I'm at the point where I might YOLO book Glamsquad, but the way you can't pick your artist via Glamsquad gives me pause.

Appreciate any recs! TY!
