High Zs on C32 RCBOs

This ones got me scratching my head, I’ve been to a friends business to carry out an EICR as they’ve had a few issues on a 1 yr old NAPIT certed install.

I wasn’t able to do any dead testing as it’s a business, I’ll have to go back after hours or on the w/end.

It’s an office but for some reason the whole board is populated with C curve RCBOs.

I took a few readings and immediately got 0.9-1.55 on the rings which should be max 0.55

Im hoping its down to loose connections but I’m worried in the event it isn’t if ill be able get those values within range. Can we rely on the RCD for fault protection here and c3 or is it a case of changing breakers for Bs and trying to get those zs within range of 1.09 in the rings?

Quinetic wifi timer function

I’ve fitted a Quinetic wifi receiver and wifi transmitter in the past but i never used any of the app functions myself so I don’t know how well they work but I think it might work well for a job I’ve got to quote.

The customer is an elderly lady that would like her front door lights on a timer. Ive tried timers before but they usually go out of sync especially with daylight savings etc.

I always also thinking i could integrate a daylight sensor too so they come on later in summer.

Is there a better way?

Being asked to work around a plasterer

Ive been asked to chase and fit new sockets whilst a plasterer does other rooms in a house and I’ve basically said no at this point.

Ive worked around a plasterer before and the last time i was told they are just doing a little prep work but they ended up doing a full skim and it really messed with my work flow.

There’s other reasons and i don’t want to appear awkward, how do you tell customers why it doesn’t work? Is there a simple explanation?

Flashing people through at junctions whilst holding traffic behind 🫪

Ok I understand it if you in slow moving traffic or you’re slowing down and flash a car through in front of you.

What i don’t understand is when people start to act like a traffic conductor, stopping their car in the middle of a junction and letting all traffic through whilst holding the traffic behind them.

It doesn’t even make things any better you’re just building up more traffic that would naturally clear if everyone keeps moving.

EICR and fault fix rant/ state of our industry

I was recommended by a friend to their neighbour to fix a tripping issue that a previous electrician had not been able to fix. I spoke to them over the phone and recommended an EICR as the house appeared to have a serious issue, so I wanted a full picture.

I went over to look/quote and found the previous electrician had fitted an RCBO to a split load board in an attempt to fix it which had me concerned. I quoted £300 (i need to charge more) to carry out an EICR inc vat and said id hopefully find and fix the fault the same day.

On the day i tested the whole house and on that circuit with the rcbo i found a loose high resistance connection on the neutral, this was pulling the neutral-live voltage down to 200v (floating neutral) explained their tripping issue.

What baffles me is the guy had a bill for £400 for the rcbo and other pissing about and he wanted £700 to come back to try and fix it again. So basically this guy is charged £350 a day to not even fix anything.

Im not even gold carded as i lack my am2e and i fix it this fault in half an hour after i find it during the basic tests… is the standard of the industry?!

Btw this fault could have of been found with a plug tester.

HMO consumer units

This is a tricky one because i think it depends on local authority.

Ive just done a EICR on a three story HMO with a plastic split load board in the entrance hallway/ stairwell. Fire escape route.

Id usually code as C3 for this and then C3 for type AC aswell but as a HMO isnt the standard higher? Im looking to code as C2 but is that too strict?

I think I should be expecting firesealing, 18th edition board and type As as a minimum?

How often do you find you go to one of the wholesalers and ask for an item, only to be told it doesn’t exist, then having to get your phone out to show them. I think Ive got to the point where I’m going to just give them part numbers.

I know some parts are rare, but I asked for a C25 3P breaker at CEF, and got a response like I’ve made it up.

I think wholesalers staff should do some minimum training so they actually understand the industry. Rant over 😂
