ATLA is great at "show, don't tell." After Azula knocks out Iroh at the end of 'The Chase' (S2;E8), there is a quick shot at Toph looking absolutely distraught. The camera then pans down to her feet to tell us that she knows that it was the kind old man she had tea with just earlier.
