Reviewing the TCL Flip 2

My new phone arrived on Saturday, and I've been playing with it so that I could give at least a somewhat knowledgeable review. Note that I have not tried Calculator, E-mail, Browser, Messages, or usb tethering and hotspot. I know that it will speak inside of the message edit box, but I haven't sent a message, since it seems I need to add a contact first. The only ones i would really use from those are Calculator and hotspot/tethering, anyway. I shall divide this into pros, cons, and overall opinion.

Pros

*It has real buttons. This was my main purpose in buying this phone. I was sick of touchscreens. The navigation pad isn't really tactile in the sense of having separate buttons as my Kyocera Rally did, but it's fairly easy to figure out, since it's just a circle with only four options.

* Yes, it has a screen reader. It's called Readout. Tello does not include the user manual in the box and directs users to the official one by TCL. For some inexplicable reason, while they mention other accessibility features such as hearing aid compatibility, they say absolutely nothing about a screen reader. Fortunately, both AT&T and Tracfone do. This is from AT&T.

https://www.att.com/device-support/index/tcl/flip-2/

* Readout reads almost everything. Almost all menus are read. Certainly, important ones such as settings are, except for the battery percentage. I can easily add a Bluetooth device, set an alarm, change ring tones, switch to usb file transfer mode, read all files on the phone (and presumably on an sd card/I'm waiting for that to arrive), read notifications, use the Music, Recorder, and Notes programs. I think I can also add contacts, but I'm still working on that.

*Files are easily transferred from my computer to the phone and vise versa. Even though it's a very old version (11), on AOSP, so I'm not truly surprised about that.

*It works well with an external keyboard. Mostly, I won't be using one, but it really helps when adding contacts, writing notes, or sending texts, though I usually do the last via Google Voice on my computer.

*It's not huge. I was concerned that it would be a very long phone, but it's really not. It's also narrow and very easy to hold in the hand.

*The battery life is excellent. It lasts for a long time if it's just sitting idle.

*It has a headphone jack. I really missed that when going to the SE3 from my A15. Now, I can listen to things without worrying that the batteries in my earbuds will die.

Cons

*Setting it up the first time requires sighted assistance. There is no way to turn Readout on with a hotkey such as the volume buttons, as with regular Android. But the option appears very early in the process, and if you wanted to, once it was on, you could finish the process yourself.

*Setting alarms can be confusing at first. For some reason, while it always speaks the first number in each column (hour and minute), when I arrow up and down, it says nothing. Then, when I go back to it, it will tell me the changes. For example, if the hour is on 9 and I set it to 10, it will not say "10". IIf the minute is on 29 and I set it to 30, it says nothing. But if I then go back to the hour column, it will say "10" and if I then go to the minute column, it will say "30". Now that I know this, it's fairly simple to do.

*The battery percentage isn't announced via the menus. As with the clock, I don't understand this. It reads everything up to clicking on "battery level" and then it just says "okay" without actually telling me the level. The only way I can be sure of it is to plug the phone into a wall outlet, a computer, or a power bank.

*The calendar does not speak at all. Absolutely nothing in the calendar speaks.

*It does not announce whose calling. At first, I was upset about this. Then, I realized that the only phone which did that was my Kyocera Rally and then only because I chose a ring tone that specifically read out messages. None of my iphones (SE, SE2, and SE3) nor my galaxy A15 read out numbers. I must unlock the phone to read them. Here, though, if I open the phone, it answers. The other option is press any key, so no matter what, I won't ever know who's calling. I can, however, set specific ring tones for contacts and just ignore everyone else.

*Programs can be installed on it, but it's not easy or officially supported. I wasn't sure whether to include this in Pros or Cons, but since everyone says it's extremely difficult, as the phone must be rooted and failure and even ruining the phone are possible, I put it under Cons. I won't be attempting it. But for those interested, this is a forum discussion that explains how to do it. It also contains a site with programs for flip phones in general, so you might find it useful, even if you own another model or brand entirely.

https://www.howardforums.com/threads/tcl-flip-2-modding-info.1927948/

*The branding on this phone is very confuding. When trying to determine if this phone had a screen reader, I came across several similar-sounding names. The Alcatel My Flip 2 and Flip Go 2 are entirely different phones. But the TCL Flip 2 and Alcatel TCL Flip 2, all with the model number T408DL (or ALT408DL) are the same thing.

Overall Opinion

I absolutely love this phone! It's small, light, has real buttons, speaks what I need it to speak, and even has some extras like music, Recorder, Notes, alarm/timer, and hotspot. I can finally simply call someone and hang up without annoyances, an use a phone that doesn't require the strength of Hercules and the hands of a giant to hold! I would highly recommend this to anyone who just wants a simple phone and doesn't want to pay over $300 for the Minivision2+. While the Flip 2 isn't designed for the blind, it does most things right and can definitely be used daily.

Recordings from Ivanhoe

Does anyone know if there were any arias or sections recorded from Ivanhoe, by Arthur Sullivan, prior to 1964? I say that because the original score was lost in a fire then. It would be interesting to hear at least some parts of it.

Serious Problem with GMail

Update. Now, it's working! Thank goodness. I still have no idea what is going on. I signed in with Supermium (a fork of Google Chrome) and the site is working again. I then tried Thunderbird 102 and was able to search, and then went back to 78 with the same result. Who understand this? I'm leaving this in case anyone experiences something similar. I have no idea what on Earth is going on with GMail tonight! I tried sending a reply to a friend via Thunderbird 78, as usual, but it didn't work. Then, search stopped working there, so I tried another copy on another computer with the same result. Then, I went to the actual GMail site itself (I despise that place) but even its own search button said "unavailable". I had to go message by message to find the one I wanted. I didn't change any settings, either in Thunderbird or GMail itself. I also tried it in my virtual machine, which I know as a 100% fact should work, because it's what I normally use, but it did the same thing However, once I switched to my other GMail account, search worked fine. Can anyone help me figure out what is going on?

Otello, an Accessible Audio Equaliser

I am sharing this with you because not only did it begin here, but it may prove useful to some of you, both for individual arias and full operas that you may wish to make clearer or add some bass or trebel to. Some time ago, I began this enormous thread about frequency restoration in acoustic recordings. (link for background/can be skipped)

https://www.reddit.com/r/OldOpera/comments/1oqgz2k/frequency_restoration_in_acoustic_recordings/

To make a very long story short, there is software that can do this, but ninety-nine percent of it is inaccessible with NVDA (my screen reader). The one program that is, Audacity, is far too complicated for me to understand. I found some sites with sliders, but even they didnt read out what they were, leaving me confused and annoyed. So after months of getting nowhere, I decided to write my own program. This is actually becoming quite popular in the blind community, so I thought why not try it? I named it Otello, both to honour Francesco Tamagno, the quality of whose recordings started me on this journey, and because I felt like some kind of a warrior while doing this. Below are some essential facts from the help file.

"***Important Notes

  1. This program was made with Windows Forms and was written in C#. It was created with Perplexity. I myself am not a programmer and know nothing about code. However, I tested each and every feature before releasing this to you. So I know that it works and that it is safe.

  2. This is a portable program. It will not be installed on your machine. Simply run Otello.exe and it will start. If you delete the folder, it's gone. However, it does require Microsoft .Net Framework 4.8, which can be downloaded from their site.

  3. While this program was created with artificial intelligence, it is not used in the processing of the files. Otello is simply an equaliser. At best, it can help reveal features that exist in recordings which may be difficult to hear due to the original recording technology. It does not technically add anything to them. Therefore, it may work better on some types of recordings than others i.e. electric versus acoustic.***

===

System Requirements

This program works on Windows 7 and later, on both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. However, it was specifically made for Windows 7.

===

General Purpose

Otello is a simple, screen reader-accessible audio equaliser. It is designed so that anyone, including those with no knowledge of technical terms and frequency numbers (I'm among them), can use it to change the sound of recordings. If you've used the sliders on a stereo or the knobs on a mixer, this should be easy. If you're used to controling the sound on an original acoustic machine, you're a genius and this should be very easy!"

TCL Flip 2 from Tello

I am strongly considering buying the TCL Flip 2 from Tello. I am currently on Mint Mobile, and it will work there as well, but I like Tello's pricing. Anyway, after some research, it seems that this phone has speech and a normal keypard like my old Kyocera Rally, which is no longer supported due to it being a 3g phone. The Flip 2 runs on AOSP 11 (open source Android), so I can use it as a hotspot for my computer, which is what I use for almost everything anyway. It's also small when closed so I can easily carry it with me. I wish it could be updated to the latest version of AOSP and run Seeing AI and Weather, but I don't think it's possible. Still, for making and receiving calls, checking the time, setting alarms, and maybe listening to some music or documentaries via the file manager and media player, it sounds great. Has anyone else here used it, particularly with speech?

A Note About Posting

*Administrator*

A comment made yesterday inspired me to write this post. Please note that this is for everyone. I am not singling out anyone. It seems that some are a little confused as to what can be posted here. Unlike r/Blind, posts do not need to be about blindness or even related to it. We certainly do accept questions and discussions about blindness, adaptive technology, surveys, and student/individual/company projects relating to the blind, but really, this is a place where we can get to know each other and post what's on our minds. Almost anything is fine, as long as it's legal. I just ask that those who join be over eighteen and act respectfully. Please note that this is not a support group. It's meant to have a positive, relaxed atmosphere for the blind and sighted alike.

Two Subreddits: Old Opera, and Blind and Fine

Here are two subreddits that I created.

Old Opera

This is a subreddit for those who love, or are even curious about, opera and its singers from the 1950's and earlier. Feel free to ask questions, share reviews and links, and discuss this wonderful genre of music and the singers and composers who brought it to life. Everyone, from beginners to experts, is welcome.

https://www.reddit.com/r/OldOpera/

Blind and Fine

If you want to join apositive subreddit for the blind, try r/BlindandFine. The subject matter is far less strict than at r/blind, since not everything needs to be related to blindness. This is more of a place where we can get to know each other and have fun. We allow sighted people to join as well, and we welcome questions if they are genuine, requests for feedback on surveys or technology about/for the blind, etc. However, I do ask that you join only if you are eighteen or older. Please also note that this is not a therapy/support group. If you need that, then r/blind is for you. I am not an administrator there.

Novelty in the Twenty-first Century

Today, I was thinking of how many ideas and technologies that we take for granted were once considered impossible, pseudosciences, or just ridiculous. It also seems to me that we're not as impressed with new inventions or ideas as we once were, as if every major thing has been discovered or created. Of course, it's not true. But we have so many things in the past, that the novelty seems to have worn off. What do you think? Are there things that still amaze you? Can we still feel that sense of awe at something new, even if it exists in a field with which we're familiar? Do you think there are any current ideas that we consider foolish that future generations might take for granted as being true or possible?

Phone Suggestions needed

I need an alternative to my iPhone or my Galaxy A15 for making calls. I am totally blind and also have hyperhydrosis (excessive sweating). The latter isn't always bad, but when it is, it makes using a touchscreen more difficult. Plus, I have no patience with them, especially for a basic thing like making calls, even when my hands are totally dry. As it is, I just call from my contacts because I can't dial normally. I then spend several minutes trying to hang up because the call isn't always in focus, and when it is, it's difficult to find the end call option. When it's not, I have to try to get back to that window in the first place. I just want to dial a number, hit send, talk, and hit end. I believe my Galaxy can use the volume buttons for the last part, but it's a large phone, so I switched to the iPhone SE 2022. It works well for other things, but as a basic phone, it's annoying!

I'm considering a Blindshell 3, even though it is still much larger than I'd prefer. My other options are a MiniVision2+, and a SmartVision3. The MiniVision2+, at least, is the right size and much cheaper. All have real buttons. I use my iPhone to make and receive calls, to check the weather, time, and news, to set alarms, and to read printed text via Seeing AI. Rarely, I might change some Alexa settings or use Merlin Bird ID. Which phone should I get, or is there another option that I'm not aware of? I'm in New Jersey and am using Mint Mobile, if it helps.

Astonishing Clarity in A Radio Broadcast

Update. This is from 1942, not 1939. I know this is not opera, but I had to share it. Never in my forty-two years of life have I been so impressed with the sound quality of anything given the era in which it was made! I am fairly certain this is from a Berlin radio concert from 1939, but it sounds like it was recorded yesterday! Even his studio recordings aren't this clear until the 1950's! What in the universe did they use to record this!

A Real Introduction

Since we have been given permission to write full introductions, here is mine. For the sake of honesty, Georgiana Brummell is not my legal name, but it is what I use online. I live in New Jersey and am forty-two years old. Some of my interests include studying dandyism, nineteenth-century English grammar, Upper Received Pronunciation, the Italian language, the Regency, opera, and MS-DOS. I like coffee, tea, wine, cooking, British literature, nature and historical documentaries, gardening, cats, hot weather, and playing cards and dice. I love opera (particularly singers from the early 1900's through the 1950's), classical music (from Baroque through early Romantic), and popular music (from the 1950's through the 1970's). I prefer antique menswear and accessories and do not wear feminine clothing. I love wit, wordplay, and dry humour without vulgarity. I am a happily childfree atheist. I love cats. I have been totally blind since I was two months old, due to Retinopathy of Prematurity. I can be found on mastadon as dandylover1@someplace.social, on Dreamwidth as dandylover one, and on Escargot (MSN Mesenger) as dandylover1@escargot.chat. I generally get along best with seniors, but I will accept anyone as a friend as long as he's over eighteen at the minimum.

Mastodon and Dreamwidth

How many of you here use Mastodon or a similar service, or are interested in the Fediverse in general? I stopped using Facebook in October of 2024 when they shut down the Basic Mobile site. I then tried Friendica, then Akkoma, before finally settling on Mastodon. The other two were okay with a client but the main sites weren't truly accessible. Anyway, you can find me at dandylover1@someplace.social or this link. Feel free to include your names and/or links as well if you want others to add you.

https://someplace.social/@dandylover1

This is not part of the Fediverse, but I also use Dreamwidth and am dandylover1 there. Again, if you use it and would like others to add you, feel free to include your username and/or link.

Quick Introduction and Survey

Hello. I'm not sure if general introductions are permitted here, so I will just say that I am totally blind and joined this subreddit in order to answer any questions that may be asked. Please be aware that my answers are my own and do not reflect the blind community as a whole. I actually found an interesting list of questions for the blind and chose to answer them in my journal. The link is below, just for some inspiration. Of course, if anyone eould like to ask me anything here, please do so. By the way, I love the tags in this subreddit.

Tito Schipa: Pourquoi me reveiller

Since we've all been in a French mood lately, here is Schipa singing the original version of his favourite aria, though he did specify he preferred it in Italian. It's beautiful no matter how he sings it. He was so associated with the role of Werther and lovd it so much that his son devotes a section of his biography to a discussion of it!

For those who prefer the Italian and/or who want something visual, this comes with an actual video!

Personal Requirements When Buying a House

As usual, yet another good post was removed from r/Blind. Sadly, I didn't catch the author in time to tell him to post here, and when I tried to respond, Reddit for Blind shut down. Anyway, the question was something like what do blind people look for when buying a house. I will write my answer in comments. I am going to keep with the theme of the answers there and make this a more personal question rather than a generic one. What would you look for in such a scenario?

Dame Eva Turner, Interview at Ninety

Here is a wonderful interview with Dame Eva Turner, at the age of ninety. it's from Desert Island, so there is some beautiful music included as well. I must admit, I don't know any of the singers heard here, except Domingo, and only then in passing. But several do seem interesting enough to research. The anecdotes are excellent and range from funny to interesting. One thing I found noteworthy was her pronunciation of (Turandot), especially since so many think she was the best one ever. I recall reading an article in which it was discussed in general, and the author said that one of the original singers pronounced it with the t, indicating that this is how it was said then. Can anyone confirm this? Also, did the original (Turandot ever make any recordings?

Low Vision Simulation Tool Suggestion

I just saw the following this post on r/Blind and it inspired me to write this. Note: they may delete it, since it contains a website. They have strange rules and who knows what gets deleted over there.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Blind/comments/1v3mucf/i_finally_have_a_better_way_to_understand_my_moms/

In summary, someone created a website to simulate his mother's vision loss. It is specifically designed to show what she sees.

https://through-her-eyes.schlab.de

I wrote the following.

"I think it's a truly wonderful thing you did, for you, your father, and even your mother. It may bring all of you closer and help both of you understand her better, as you said. Perhaps, something like this can be done on a larger scale i.e. there would be a main site and someone could choose the symptoms that would then appear in the simulation. I'm going to suggest that in the Blind and Fine subreddit, since we have several programmers and developers there, as well as many blind people. This might become a new tool to help people understand what their loved ones are going through."

Unfortunately, I can't be involved in any testing of such a site, since I am totally blind and have never seen. But perhaps, others here can.

Personal Defaults Versus Standard Versions

This is somewhat related to the interpolation post, but since it's a bit different, I decided to post it separately. Are there any singers whose versions of arias you're so used to that it makes everyone else sound strange, even if they're technically singing according to the score or popular standards? I am extremely familiar with Schipa's repertoire, and for me, his voice and style are what I think of when I imagine the famous roles of the leggero tenor or hear the arias in my mind. But when I hear others singing them, while I notice some slight differences, they don't bother me. But it's an entirely different story with Tamagno. When I hear others singing the arias he recorded, it's like they're from another planet! At first, I thought it was just a particular version, but this remains true in many cases despite the singer in question. Then, I found this article. It focuses on Otello, but I've noticed it with a few other recordings as well, including Di quella pira, where everyone else seems to be singing it at breakneck speed. Even De Negri, who substituted for him, sings Ora e per sempre addio so differently that I gave up trying to follow it.

https://operawire.com/on-this-day-what-tamagnos-recordings-teach-us-about-singing-verdis-otello/

Have I made the dramatic equivalent of using De Lucia as my base i.e. someone who is so idiosyncratic that his versions of things are not standard at all?
