Is this IBS or anxiety?
Hello everyone. I’m a 21-year-old guy, and I mostly spend my day at home doing content creation for YouTube.
I’m experiencing something that I’m not sure is IBS or something else. I’ve researched IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome), but I’m not sure if what I’m experiencing actually fits IBS.
It’s a little embarrassing to share, but I really want to understand what might be happening.
The main issue is sudden poop urgency triggered by knowing that a bathroom may be unavailable for a while.
For example, if someone in my house goes to the bathroom to take a bath, I suddenly get an urge to poop. I may get stomach cramps, heaviness, and a strong feeling that I need to go within the next few minutes or something bad will happen.
I think the trigger is partly psychological. My mind knows that the person may take 20+ minutes, so I start thinking, “What if I need to use the bathroom while they’re still in there?” That thought itself seems to trigger the urgency.
In short, whenever I know that a bathroom will be unavailable for a long period of time, I suddenly feel like I need to poop.
The strange thing is that I don’t have this problem all day. It mainly happens when I’m aware that I might not have access to a bathroom for some time.
And honestly, even holding it for 10–20 minutes during these episodes can feel extremely difficult and stressful.
I’ve been dealing with this almost every day, but I feel embarrassed and haven’t really been able to talk about it with my family.
I’m not asking anyone to diagnose me, but I would really appreciate your honest opinions and experiences.
Does this sound like IBS, anxiety-related bowel urgency, or something else? Has anyone experienced something similar?
