What is the opportunity for overtime like at BCS for engineers?

I assume it varies by department, but what has been your experience with overtime? Are you allowed to work overtime anytime you want and get paid accordingly? Is it unpaid overtime because you’re on salary? Is it paid, but infrequent?

I have an opportunity to work in a certain group at a utility company post grad where I could work as much overtime as I want and therefore have the ability to make 6 figures in my first year as an engineer. However, it’s mostly project management, so it’s not the field I’m looking to be in.

How secure is your job at Boeing?

Today was my last day at an internship with a utility company. While talking with one of our Engineer IIIs, I mentioned how Boeing (Charleston, SC) was always a major goal of mine. He asked if I knew anything about what it’s like to work there, and he told me about how it’s very cut throat and in some cases you won’t know if you have a job the next year.

I know to take everything with a grain of salt because they want me to come back and work for them, but I just wanted some perspective on this.

I’m a mechanical engineering student, but I’ve been thrown into an internship that is mostly civil work. How can I learn the basics and the jargon faster?

I’m a MechE student doing an internship for a utility company with a project group led by civil engineers. We work at a coal generating station. Our work so far has mostly been coordinating with contractors for 2 new units that are being implemented over the next few years. The area has been graded and excavation starts soon as well as another contractor putting in rigid inserts. I guess most of our work is in more of the land development area. It’s only my first week and I have no prior civil engineering experience. I want to know how I can kick start my summer and become useful earlier on. Any resource recommendations or general advice would be much appreciated.

TL;DR: MechE student with no civil experience working in a civil role for a utility company looking for resources and advice to kick start my summer.

Me and my girlfriend have plans to take a short anniversary trip that I would have to take off 2-3 days for this summer. I’m wondering what other people’s experiences have been with taking vacations during a summer internship.
