Could modern operating systems implement a universal “child mode” controlled by a single toggle?

Most devices already have parental controls, but they’re often complicated and inconsistent across apps and platforms. So this can make them difficult to use for parents

I’m wondering if it would be technically feasible to simplify this into a single “child mode” setting where a parent just selects an age range, and the OS automatically applies restrictions such as:

- Blocking age-inappropriate apps
- Filtering websites and search results
- Limiting social media and messaging features
- Applying screen time limits
- Controlling what content is shown across apps, browsers, and media platforms

The idea would be that parents only need to enable it once. After that, the rules and blocked content lists would be centrally managed (e.g. by the OS vendor or a government digital safety authority) and automatically updated.

The system wouldn’t access personal data on the device — it would only enforce restrictions at the OS/network level.

From a technical standpoint, is this actually practical across modern devices and the open internet? What would the main challenges be ?

Thought I’d be adventurous and try out some Tequeños. Taste was decent but their appearance didn’t quite match the packaging

Tips for launching 2 apps in split screen automatically on Android head unit? Either on startup or from a (physical, or on screen) button

Tips for launching 2 apps in split screen automatically on Android head unit? Either on startup or from a button

I’m trying to set up some automation on my Android head unit, mainly because I use Waze + Spotify in split screen almost every time I drive. At the moment it’s a bit fiddly having to manually put them into split screen every time.

Ideally, I’d like to do something like this:

  • Automatically open Waze + Spotify in split screen when the head unit starts

  • Remap unused steering wheel buttons to switch between app combos

    • e.g. one button opens Waze + YouTube
    • another goes back to Waze + Spotify
    • maybe another for Waze + WhatsApp

I’ve been trying to do this with Tasker, but I’ve hit a few problems.

Main questions:

  1. What’s the most reliable Tasker trigger for when the head unit starts up? I’ve tried boot, Bluetooth connection, and screen on, but none seem fully reliable. Bluetooth sometimes works, but not consistently enough.

  2. Is it possible to remap steering wheel buttons, or even buttons on the head unit itself, to trigger a Tasker task? My head unit has a “steering wheel” app like the ones I’ve seen in YouTube videos, but none of my steering wheel buttons register inside the app. The buttons do work normally though, so I’m not sure how they’re being handled.

  3. Can I create a normal-looking app icon that appears in my app drawer/home screen, which runs a Tasker task when pressed? This would still be much better than manually setting up split screen every time, even if I can’t get the startup or steering wheel button method working.

I also tried using Logcat in Tasker to find a trigger, but nothing useful seems to appear. I started recording, pressed steering wheel buttons, the head unit power button, and an app icon that turns SWC on/off, but couldn’t see anything obvious in the logs. I also tried aLogcat and had the same issue.

Has anyone managed to get this working reliably on an Android head unit? I’m mainly looking for a practical setup rather than something perfect.

Printer recommendations for a small business? Laser vs inkjet?

I realise this may not be the perfect sub, but I’m looking for a printer for my small business and wondered if anyone here has one they’d recommend.

I don’t print huge volumes, and I already have a separate label printer for shipping labels. Most of what I need is for text-based things like signs, offers, price lists, and small display materials for market stalls or shops where my products are stocked.

I may occasionally want to print photos too. I know inkjet is usually better for photos, but I’m leaning towards laser because people seem to rate them for speed, reliability, and lower running costs long term. If photo quality isn’t good enough, I can always get photos printed professionally when needed.

The main brands I’ve been looking at are Brother, Canon, and HP. Brother seems to get a lot of praise, Canon also seems well rated, and I’m a bit wary of HP from past experience — although maybe they’re better these days.

A couple I’ve been looking at:

  1. Canon i-SENSYS LBP647Cdw colour laser printer

  2. Brother HL-L3220CWE colour LED printer

(I know the brother one is LED and not laser, but they seem very similar from what I can tell? Just LEDs are apparently simpler and so assumed to be more reliable - but please correct me if thats wrong)

Has anyone used either of these, or would you recommend something else for light small-business use?

Any tips welcome. Thanks!

Youtube search is literally useless now. It used to be useful to research products to buy, but now a search like this will have a video with 100k + videos at the top of results yet its complete AI nonsense. If only there was some way to see dislikes to instantly recognize a trash video

PIP/Picture in Picture not working on my android head unit. I can see the permission settings to give apps access to PIP, but it still doesnt work. Cant find any setting in the factory settings for it, and dont know password for developer options

So as in the title.

My head unit is using android 11 (despite their specs saying 16 lol. But I downloaded devcheck and that says version 11)

It seems like this should be pip compatible, but I know sometimes this can be disabled. However, I cant find any option to enable it anywhere if this is the case. It may be within developer options but I have no idea. But the issue is, I cant get into it. I've tried 10+ different passwords that Ive found online.

I have messaged the seller but no idea if they will reply. If they don't, does anyone have any suggestions?

I love a good spa, but it’s annoying how stupidly expensive they all seem to be in the uk (I miss living abroad when i could go to spas for under £10 that were usually significantly better than ‘luxury’ spas here). I’m not looking for a place to get spa treatments and stuff, more a spa to use ie hot tub/heated pools, steam room, sauna etc.

I stayed at Ramside hall a couple of years ago and I thought that seemed nice and is within the price range I’m talking about (I can actually see rooms there as low as £150 but no mention of spa included so maybe extra charge to use it).

So just wondered if any of you have recommendations for similar hotels like this with a decent enough spa to use that i won’t need to take out a loan for?
