Stottie

Why does nobody sell Stottie apart from you guys. Greggs in Galashiels used to sell them and I would buy a couple if I was down there for work, but they stopped selling them and I had to wait until I visited Newcastle. Unfortunately when I visit, I tend to visit several public houses and therefore in no state to escort a bag full of delicate delicacies back home. It's such a shame nobody outside the North East of England knows about them.

Why does everything take so fucking long?

Gateshead flyover demolition. A1 upgrade. Northumberland Street. Tyne Bridge renovation. Now the Central motorway. Why do these things take literally years to do? It's rare to even see anyone working on these things. In Japan they would be done in weeks. In China they would be done in days, maybe hours. Is Britain uniquely shit in these things or do other western countries operate at a similar glacial pace?

Another one bites the dust

"A councillor has resigned 10 days after winning a seat in the local elections because her "business commitments have expanded rapidly".

Reform UK's Danielle Cavanagh won one of three seats in the High Fell ward of Gateshead Council from Labour in the local elections on 7 May.

A statement from chair of Reform's Gateshead Central and Whickham group Lindsay Atkinson said it was not a decision "taken lightly" by Cavanagh, but the party was "very confident" of holding the seat."

The Great Fire of Byker: 15th Anniversary

On Thursday 19th May 2011, 15 years ago to this very day, was the Great Fire of Byker. Let us never forget all the scrap lost to the Toon inferno and the hard work by the Fire Service to put it out. 🫡 🔥

Please feel free to share your memories of that smoke filled day.

Where can I work for a day around the Cramlington area?

I have to spend a working day somewhere in/around Cramlington and I need a place with decent wifi that I can safely spend all day and log onto the laptop to work. I will have a car so I can travel, but also need to be able to park it probably 9-4 or 5.

I see there is a library in Cramlington but it looks like it's inside a retail park which has a limit on parking time? Also unsure what the facilities are like inside in terms of desks etc. I know in my local libraries there is a pretty wide variation in the facilities, some have loads of desks anyone can use and others only sofa seating.

Any suggestions welcome, cheers.

Barbers specialising in medium length hair in Gateshead/Newcastle?

I’m looking for a barber that can do a good job with medium length hair - specifically, I tend to get a short back and sides with a fade, but a longer fringe

I don’t mind paying a premium if it’s worth it

Cheers!

City driving tips

Officially had my license for two months, and my car for one. I’ve only accidentally driven into Newcastle city centre once and since then I’ve been so apprehensive about going back because of the traffic and just how nervous I get in the city. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Casual football in Newcastle? ⚽️

Posting in case anyone’s new to Newcastle or just itching to play and meet people. I help a non profit organise community games in Kenton, Woolsington and Blakelaw every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday night so ideal for anyone in Kingston Park, Fawdon, Cowgate, Brunton Bridge, Westerhope and town. It's 1hr 6 and 8 aside on astro. All levels welcome even if you’re not fit or haven’t played in years.

There’s no commitment, you just turn on and play whenever you're available and all you need are football boots.

Great way to improve fitness, confidence and your social circle. I've met all my best friends through the game.

Drop a quick comment or DM if you fancy playing and I’ll add you to the players list ⚽️

Lack of accountability from instructor and gym owner

A violent sexual assault happened to someone very close to me within a martial arts community.

The coach involved did not commit the assault himself, but he was made aware of what happened afterward. He acknowledged possession of evidence related to the incident, assured the victim that he would safeguard it, and repeatedly positioned himself as someone who would help her when she was finally ready to seek accountability.

At the time, the victim was not emotionally ready to report what had happened. She trusted him when he said he would hold onto the evidence and assist her when that day eventually came. In fact, he told her to give him all the evidence (such as the screenshots of the bullying) so that he would safekeep it for her.

He has since disappeared. Calls have gone unanswered. Messages across multiple numbers and platforms have been ignored. Comments asking for accountability have been deleted. Instead, explanations have been given that his presence at his new gym is too important, that leaving or getting involved would inconvenience the business and reflect badly on the gym.

And that is the part that is difficult to stomach.

At some point, silence stops being neutrality. When someone knowingly inserts themselves into the aftermath of a serious abuse situation, promises support, agrees to safeguard evidence, and then withdraws the moment accountability threatens their comfort, reputation or business interests, that silence becomes part of the harm itself.

Martial arts communities speak endlessly about loyalty, tribe, honour and protecting one another. But those words become hollow when safeguarding suddenly becomes inconvenient.

With the wider conversations happening around abuse, power and accountability within martial arts communities, I genuinely want to ask: what recourse do survivors actually have when influential people choose reputation management over transparency?

If a coach positions himself as a trusted authority figure, asks a survivor to trust him with evidence, promises support when she is finally ready to come forward, and then disappears because his gym now takes priority, how are survivors supposed to seek accountability?

I am not asking for harassment or a witch hunt. I am asking why silence and avoidance are still so tolerated when they protect institutions and reputations at the expense of vulnerable people.

Surely survivors deserve more than being abandoned the moment accountability becomes inconvenient.

Ebike rental help needed

Hi all,

My mom, who is nearing the age of 70, decided that she wanted to do a bike tour through the UK for a month. She'll be mostly cycling and staying around Newcastle. She arrived today on her ebike but it turns out that her ebike is not managing all the hills at all. She has some luggage on the backseat so all the weight and her age are probably not helping at all.

The ebike she has is about 40nm torque, which I guess she found out is not capable at all as she has to push her bike with the luggage uphill everytime it gets too steep.

She's around Wark now and going to Bellingham tomorrow. Wondering what her options are without having to pay 1000+ quid for bike rental for a few weeks.

If anyone can give some pointers and tips on where she can acquire an ebike without breaking the bank that would be great.

Thank you all in advance!

First time in Newcastle – looking for advice on pub culture and social vibe

Hi everyone,
I’m planning a trip to Newcastle (UK) for about a week. The main purpose of my trip is not sightseeing or clubs, but more the pub culture and just having relaxed conversations with locals.
I enjoy sitting at the bar, having a few drinks, and naturally getting into conversations rather than loud nightlife or dancing clubs.
I was wondering if Newcastle is a good fit for this kind of experience?
A few specific questions:
Are pubs generally social and open to chatting with strangers, or do people mostly stick to their own groups?
Are there specific areas of the city that are better for this kind of relaxed pub atmosphere?
Any types of pubs I should look for or avoid?
Is it common to go outside for a cigarette and continue conversations there, or is that not really a thing in practice?
I’m mainly looking for a relaxed and friendly atmosphere where conversation happens naturally, not forced.
Any advice would be really appreciated. Thanks!
