Are We Pricing Students Out of Higher Education?
I believe we are going to see fewer students pursuing higher education, particularly graduate and professional degrees. And when enrollment begins to decline, universities will eventually be forced to find alternative ways to make these programs financially accessible.
The real question is: why wait until talented students are already being pushed out of higher education before addressing the problem?
Limiting access to financing does not make education less expensive. It simply changes who can afford to pursue it.
If we are not careful, higher education—especially medicine and other professional careers—will increasingly become an opportunity reserved for students whose families have the financial means or the creditworthiness to obtain large private loans.
Universities will have to adapt. I just hope they do it before an entire group of capable students is priced out of pursuing their goals.
