Does no one make small talk on the GO train?

I moved to Oshawa last year after living in North York for three years. I am a South Asian immigrant who moved to Canada almost four years ago. My job is mostly remote and I only have to go to my office occasionally which is at DT Toronto. So I usually get the GO train from either Oshawa or Whitby station. The one thing I noticed during my commute was how nobody talked to each other on the train which I found very surprising. It is a good 65 minute journey from Oshawa to DT one way. I used to commute in TTC when I lived in North York and the commute time was very short so I never paid attention to it. But now that I have to spend so much time onboard, I notice how everyone just keeps to themselves. I always thought that in North American culture , people liked to make small talk on public transit. I rarely see that on the GO train unless someone is travelling together. I have said hello/good morning to people sitting beside me and got a hello back but never really found someone willing to have a chat. Has it always been this way? Just curious.
