My way of making conversation out of thin air

I've been quite socially active past couple years and I've noticed a specific habit I have that I quite often use to create at least some briefly lasting topics out of thin air.

I ask "What's your favourite [insert something from recent conversation or from your surroundings]?"

I've noticed one day that I use this more often than I imagine, sometimes even in a nonsensical way where I ask about something that the other person cannot even really come up with any sensible answer. But somehow it's seen as amusing in those situations rather than necessarily annoying, as long as I'm not expecting a clear response always.

some examples, if we're eating lasagne i might ask what their favourite pasta dish is, or what's their favourite thing to cook with some ingredient found in the pasta. If they share some hobby or experience I may ask what their favourite thing about it was. And sometimes if we've sat at a desk and I've seen a stapler I've asked what's been their favourite stapler. Sometimes you cann get quite personal and surprising answers, and when done right it's seen as genuine interest and bonding. I recommend trying it out if you don't have anything else to say!

Hey! I'm curious to hear what kind of things a control systems engineer usually spends their day working on, especially how much math you get to use daily or weekly and what do you feel most of your time is spent on?
