Welcome to r/queerplatonic!

Whether you’re new to the concept of QPRs, have been in one for years, questioning if a QPR describes your relationship, or just learned what “queerplatonic” means, we’re glad you’re here!

This subreddit is a place to discuss queerplatonic connections and experiences, ask questions, share and celebrate stories, and learn from one another. Everyone is welcome here, regardless of their age, gender identity, romantic or sexual orientation, and background, as long as discussions remain respectful and in good faith.

What is a Queerplatonic Relationship?

A queerplatonic relationship (QPR), also known as a quasiplatonic relationship or queerplatonic partnership, is a close, committed relationship that exists outside of the traditional ideas of friendship and romantic partnership. Some may call it the “in-between” of friendship and can “blur the lines” between what’s “platonic” and “romantic.” These relationships are often non-romantic in nature and don’t inherently include feelings of romantic love.

The nature of a QPR is defined by the people in it rather than societal expectations and is intentionally broad. There is no single “correct” way for a QPR to look. Some resemble close friendships while others resemble romantic partnerships without romantic attraction. Some involve physical affection, sex, cohabitation, raising children, or lifelong commitment while others might involve none of these. Every QPR is different and unique.

Frequently Asked Questions

This section will go over the most common questions we get about our community. A more in-depth FAQ will be linked in the future.

Q. Do I have to be aromantic or asexual to have a QPR?

No. While the concept of queerplatonic relationships originated in aromantic and asexual communities, anyone can use the term if they feel it accurately describes their relationship.

You can be straight, gay, lesbian, bisexual, etc. and have a QPR with anyone of any orientation if everyone involved agrees. If you’d prefer to have a QPR with a specific gender, that’s okay too.

Q. Can a QPR involve romance?

It can. Some people describe their QPRs as entirely non-romantic while others experience romantic feelings or engage in activities that are traditionally considered romantic. QPRs are entirely defined by the people in the relationship.

Q. Can a QPR involve sex?

Yes. Some QPRs are sexual while others are not. Sexual activity doesn’t determine whether a relationship is queerplatonic or not.

Q. Is a QPR just a really close friendship?

Not necessarily. While some QPRs can resemble close friendships, they are intentionally understood by the people involved as something that doesn’t fit neatly into either friendship or romance.

Q. Is a QPR just dating without romance?

Not necessarily. Some QPRs resemble romantic relationships while others don’t. Some QPRs may have romantic feelings while others don’t. There is no single template for how a QPR should look and operate.

Q. How do I know if my relationship is a QPR?

There is no test or checklist that determines whether your relationship is a QPR. If you and the other person(s) feel your relationship doesn’t fit comfortably into traditional friendship or romance, and “queerplatonic” more accurately describes your experience, the label may be useful.

Q. How do I find a QPR?

There isn’t a single dedicated or reliable place to “find” a QPR. Like friendships and romantic relationships, queerplatonic relationships usually develop naturally through meeting people and forming connections. This might include meeting people through:

  • Existing friendships.
  • LGBTQ+, aromantic, and asexual communities.
  • Hobby groups, clubs, and events.
  • Dating or friendship apps.

Our subreddit is for community building and discussion, so relationship-seeking posts here are not allowed. However, we recognize the difficulty of finding someone who understands this type of relationship so we encourage people to redirect to our partner community, r/QPPapplications. Please read over the subreddit rules upon joining.

Q. Can minors be in QPRs with adults?

No. Adult/minor QPRs are not allowed on this subreddit. A QPR is not an exception to age-of-consent laws, safeguarding standards, or the boundaries that apply to other relationships, regardless of if the QPR is “non-romantic” or “platonic.”

Posts or comments attempting to facilitate, justify, or normalize adult/minor QPRs will be removed and may result in a ban.

More Resources & What's Next

As our community continues to grow and expand, we’ll be expanding the wiki with more in-depth information about QPRs, related terminology, community resources, and answers to more questions that may come up frequently. This welcome post is meant to give a quick introduction to our community and we'll continue to update the post as needed. Feel free to comment if you have any questions.

My Grandma’s CD/Music Corner

Thought this community would like this. It’s mostly CDs with some records mixed in. As you can see, the CDs were organized and stacked behind and on top of each other so they probably have hundreds.

Please enjoy this photo. My grandmothers loved music, but both have developed dementia and much of this will go along with the rest of their estate. If anyone has advice on organization and where to sell (POA, all funds go to managing their care), I’d appreciate it.
