After trying to acquire this for two years, I finally managed during the extended trip to Japan. Build time was approx 25-30 hours. The kit is very well made and very well designed, fit and finish is impeccable. Absolutely worth all the trouble of getting it home on the plane.
The figurine was the closest in scale I could find. Afaik it's not from any particular anime. Plus, there's some semblance with the wife.
The R33 will be WIP for some time still before I can get it on the road, but the 86 is perfect. It's my summer daily.
The internet is really scarce on info on the N46 engine. Since it's an economy-tuned engine with 110kW (150PS) out of a 2.0L, there's plenty of headroom for more in terms of displacement.
I've found a company that offers cam regrinds for a more aggressive profile (https://www.dbilas.com/Umschleifen-der-Seriennockenwellen-BMW-N42-N45-N46/04.068.001U) but not much else. Some few companies that offer chip tuning the N46 for a small gain on stock internals.
Anybody knowledgeable here that knows what needs to be done to make use of higher-lift-higher-duration cams on the N46? My goal would be in the 130-140kW (180-200PS) range, which would be plenty fun with a small and light car like this (and it's almost 100kg lighter than the 6-cyl variants).
I'm surprised the ergonomics of this aren't actually whack. Tracking accuracy is a bit meh though, on par with those cheap OEM keyboard-and-mouse combos you get with business computers (Dell, HP, ...)
Overall happy. Will use at the office, now that my job contract includes "management" (with the quotation marks, for whatever reason). Solely to add to the seriousness of my work during meetings.
Went to a local AE86 meet just outside Kyoto in Takao. It's a yearly event around Golden Week. Very nice people and very nice cars!
I also suggest visiting the shrines in Takao, they're absolutely stunning.
