Let's talk about AFinity (Android)

Nah, this isn't one of those "I asked Claude to build this" shitposts. It isn't even my client!

AFinity has quietly become one of the most polished Jellyfin clients out there in my opinion.. It's built by M0RPHi, who's been one of the long-time GOATs in the JellyfinCommunity

No overnight project, it's been built day by day, with improvements and a lot of attention to detail. I tried one of the first versions and said nah, came back a month ago, and was blown away

What stands out most is how smooth everything feels (made in Kotlin, it seems). It also has some cool features, such as Audiobookshelf integration, an awards section so you can see if content has won any awards, and several other goodies I haven't seen in most other Jellyfin clients. Despite all that, it still seems to fly under the radar

Figured it deserved a shout-out! it's definitely worth checking out

What are your hopes for Jellyfin 12 before the final release?

With RC2 now out, what do you think still has a realistic chance of making it into Jellyfin 12 before the stable release? And what do you think is already destined for 12.1?

From Github it seems we're past the point where I'd want to see any significant new features. At this stage I'd much rather see the team focus on fixing bugs, improving performance, and polishing the overall experience. I'd happily trade one more feature for a smoother, more stable release

That said, there's almost always something that slips in between the final RC and stable, whether it's a small quality of life improvement or an unexpected fix

So what's your prediction? What do you think still lands in 12.0, what gets pushed back, and if you could pick one thing to make it before release, what would it be? 😍

Jellyfin on Apple TV (Almost) Every tvOS Client Ranked

Thought this might interest some of us here, I already made my pick a while ago, but it was fun to see a few once that I missed in action!

Laughs in Jellyfin

Nothing says “consumer friendly media server” quite like a 3x increase with a countdown timer

Meanwhile Jellyfin continues doing what it’s always done: serving media, and not sending me monetization jump scares at 2AM

Kudos to all the devs, both jf and and the community that keeps making it better and better

Just a reminder that Streamyfin has been released for Apple TV

Got an Apple TV two days ago and it’s been very solid so far!

https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/streamyfin/id6593660679

Noticed a recent wave of vibe coded client being spammed across the subs, often pushing shady paid tiers. Easy to get pulled in, don't fall for it, just use one of the free once out there instead!

How do you onboard family and friends to your Jellyfin server?

So as the topic says, how do you onboard family and friends to your Jellyfin server, especially non-technical users?

I’m curious what actually works for people in practice!

Do you send them a written guide, walk them through it once on a call, preconfigure the app for them, use a specific client, or just keep it simple and hope they figure it out?

I’m mainly thinking about people who are not technical at all, the kind of users who may struggle with server URLs, login screens, app settings, subtitles, playback quality, or choosing the right Jellyfin client...

What has worked best for you guys, and what usually causes confusion?

Appreciation post to JellyfinCommunity!

I wanted to take a moment to say that I really appreciate this community!

To my understanding, JellyfinCommunity originally opened up when the main Jellyfin subreddit was closed during Reddit’s API policy changes. At the time, there was a gap and a need for Jellyfin users to stay connected here on Reddit..

Since then, this sub has become really well-knit for the Jellyfin ecosystem around clients, plugins, themes, and all kinds of nifty tools that are third-party projects

Not everything starts polished, some ideas are rough, experimental, and honestly sometimes a bit crazy, BUT many of them have turned out to be genuinely useful and the next big thing!!

That is one of the things I value, that there is room to talk about Jellyfin beyond just the server, and that users can share what they are building, get feedback, test ideas, and inspire each other to find stuff they never would have found through official release notes alone..

The fact that Jellyfin has recognized this sub as a sister community says a lot, and makes me feel VERY positive about the future of Jellyfin!

So, thank you to the users and developers who who help others, share setups, test things, build clients, make plugins, create themes, maintain apps, and help Jellyfin grow even more awesome!!

And finally a shoutout to the community Discord! It has been really valuable for bouncing ideas, finding new cool stuff and get feedback from people who are positive, helpful and actually build shit for the rest of us ❤️

Wholphin for Android TV reaches 1.0

The GOAT, Wholphin, has finally reached 1.0!
https://github.com/damontecres/Wholphin

I’ve been using Wholphin for around half a year now, and it’s been great seeing it improve by every release Not just adding features, but adding them in a way that feels natural for normal users!

Instead of listing features, what stands out to me is that both my mom and my sister like using it. That says a lot, it grabs the user quickly and gives them a familiar interface that actually makes sense on Android TV

If you have not tried it yet, I’d definitely recommend giving it a a run!

Also no AI slop, this is the real deal!

Welcome, Plexugees!

With the recent price changes and general enshittification around Plex, I assume we have a lot of new users finding their way over here, so I just wanted to say: welcome

Jellyfin is not Plex with a different logo. It is fully self-hosted, open source, and built around local control. No account requirement, no central auth server, no subscription tier deciding which features you get

That also means it works a bit differently. Some things may feel less polished at first, and some setup choices matter more. But once it is configured properly, you get a media server that is yours!

A few quick tips if you are new:

  • Start simple before changing everything
  • Use good folder structure and naming
  • Check the official docs before guessing
  • Back up your config and database
  • Ask questions, but include logs and system details when something breaks

This community is generally very happy to help, learned a shitton myself, especially when you show what you have already tried!

Welcome aboard!

What’s the most unexpected or niche way you’re using Jellyfin that others might not have thought about?

I have a friends who uses it for photos, some for family videos, and my uncl ethat use it at his company to showcase different filtration setups for large-scale aquariums in the office, essentially using Jellyfin as a visual reference system for clients

Curious what creative setups others are running!

Have a good weekend!
