Fix for Random Freezing on Linux

I'm making this post not to ask for help, but to share information. I want to preface this post by saying that this issue is not with Jellyfin, but Jellyfin is what became affected for me, so I decided this was probably the best subreddit to share it, though this issue could probably also affect Plex, Emby or any other service that uses GPU transcoding.

I'm running Jellyfin on a headless Debian stable install, but with the newer backports kernel on an x86-64 machine, which currently gets me kernel version 7.1.

Over the last few weeks my Jellyfin service would randomly freeze. Other services seemed unaffected most of the time. Jellyfin apps would show up as signed out, and if you manually signed in, you could, but nothing would play. Restarting the Jellyfin service, if the command even executed successfully instead of hanging, wouldn't fix the issue. Another symptom I noticed when the issue would arise is that the "htop" command wouldn't run properly; I would just get a blank screen. btop and top would work fine, but not htop.

I'm far from an expert in debugging this kind of problem, and it's entirely possible this is all wildly inaccurate since I used an LLM to help me, though I did try to verify its claims with other sources to the best of my ability. Anyway, I exported some log files and went back and forth with both a local AI and Brave.ai to help me sift thru them, while describing the issue, to try and figure out what is going on, and apparently there is a known regression in kernel 7.1, and certain versions of kernel 6.x, in the way memory translations are handled during GPU operations. This can trigger crashes in the amdgpu driver, which can cause instability in the kernel's memory subsystem, or just straight up crashes/hangs (which I also had happen once or twice) with some AMD GPUs when they perform certain operations, like hardware transcoding.

This issue didn't exist a few months ago and only recently started cropping up, coincidentally, around the time I upgraded to kernel 7.1.

The resolution, for now, seems to be to either upgrade/downgrade to an unaffected kernel version, or to disable HMM and/or IOMMU using kernel arguments at boot. I added amd_iommu=off and iommu=off to my command line arguments in grub to accomplish this.

I also found this post of someone else having driver crashes on AMD GPUs using kernel 7.1.

https://etbe.coker.com.au/2026/08/15/amd-video-llms-debian-kernels/

It has been about 48 hours, and so far I haven't had any issues, despite multiple hardware transcoding sessions within Jellyfin during that time. If I do run into anything new, I'll update or comment on this post. I just wanted to put this out there into the ether so everyone can benefit, or comment.

Also, I did run memtest on my system to verify that the system RAM wasn't faulty and everything checked out. I also performed SMART tests on all my storage media, and it all checks out fine too.

I made an iOS Jellyfin client based on Jellyfin Web, with native downloads, offline playback, and a more polished UI

I wanted a Jellyfin iOS app that basically just gives me my existing Jellyfin Web experience, including all my custom CSS, but adds the native features I actually wanted.

So I started building Jellybox. (I will change this at some point lol)

Right now it uses Jellyfin Web for browsing, so the server UI stays familiar, while downloads and offline playback are handled natively.

Current features:

  • Jellyfin Web UI with persistent login
  • Seerr integrated as another tab (optional: if Seerr is not configured the tab disappears)
  • Native movie/episode/whole-season downloads
  • Background downloads that continue with the app closed
  • Download queue with progress, speed and metadata
  • TV downloads organized by show and season
  • Offline playback through VLC
  • Audio and subtitle track selection
  • Fit, fill, 16:9 and 4:3 display modes
  • Local playback resume
  • Offline playback progress syncs back to Jellyfin when the server is available again
  • Storage usage and bulk deletion

The main idea is that I don’t want to replace Jellyfin Web with another completely different interface. I like my server UI. I just wanted it packaged into a polished native app with reliable Netflix-style downloads/offline playback.

It’s currently just a personal Xcode project running on my phone. I’m considering paying for the Apple Developer Program and turning it into something other Jellyfin users could install if there’s actually interest. Furthermore I might see if the guys at the official client would like to PR this build or implement some of my features.

Checkout the video attached as a current demo of the app, also if anyone knows a graphic designer to help create a not AI generated Icon that would be awesome.

AI disclosure: This project was built with minor AI assistance. I came up with the concept, feature set, UI/UX decisions, tested everything on-device, debugged issues, and iterated on the implementation, and wrote most of the code myself. While AI was used to help write and modify some of the Swift code. I’m still learning Swift, so I want to be transparent about how it was built.

Would you use something like this? What would you want added before you’d consider it useful?

Stitching multi disc parts together

Started selfhosting just a month or so ago now. So I recently ripped my first multi disc movie (Pearl Harbor) and questions arose....

  1. What's the best naming convention for multi disc media files?

Answer: Still figuring out which one I like best from the documentation

  2. Are there any undocumented (not in the official Jellyfin support doc's) file names that can be used?

Answer: Not sure yet, I haven't done any googling on this yet.

  3. Does Jellyfin automatically stitch these together?

Answer: (updated) It appears it does, but the fact that the additional parts are plastered on the page like they are Extra's just doesn't appeal to me. .

If I was to stitch the files myself, the Google search I just did says use MKVToolNix for MKV files or LosslessCut / FFmpeg for MP4's. What's everyone's experience been like stitching the files together? Any else tried stitching and and any good or bad luck doing this?

Domain

Hey everyone, I’m new at using this and I’m currently using tailscale for remote connection, I was wondering how to use my domain but I’m facing the issue that tailscale free version doesn’t let you use your own domain, cloudflare blocks your for streaming so how do you guys do it ? Opening a port in my router sounds a bit risky since I don’t have much experience. Thanks in advance

Moonfin: is it possible to watch a DVD splitted in two parts (cd.1 & cD.2)?

Ho everyone! I've discovered and testing Moonfin, I love it!

If possible, I'd like to do a question: Some movies are splitted in two dvd (es: The Lord of the Rings). In that case, Jellyfin indicates in its documentation, to rename the first part as "cd_1," "part.1" or similar.

With a media named in this manner, Wuold Moonfin pass to part 2 after the First?.

I hope to be clear, many thanks!

Regards.

best music player with Car Play?

whats your recommendation for music players with car play support? I'm currently trying Finer, which is okay but the display for currently playing title is always one track delayed. so when it's playing track 2 it shows track 1. are there any better working alternatives?

Movie went missing: Find by filename?

Hey all! I’m new to JellyFin so sorry if I’m not doing this right.

I’m running JellyFin (ip to date) on my Synology DD-920+ and it’s been work well. (At least once I got hardware encoding set up and working… before that it was really struggling with 4K movies). I’m just using the SynoCommunity version in package manager, and my files are on another volume in the same server. And ffmpeg7 is there, too.

I made one rookie mistake: Before I used an AppleTV for all things, and converted everything to native format with Handbrake. Slow, but I rarely add more than a movie or two per week so time is rarely ever an issue. But as a result, my movies were all named pretty basically, because all the tags were embedded as metadata by MetaX.

Sadly, JellyFin is freaking LOUSY at parsing basic data tags, it seems, and can’t seem to read CamelCase file names very well. And since I don’t have years in the file names, wow did it do poorly picking the right movie when there was more than one with the same name. Or even when there was only one. *gestures weakly*

Long story short: my current annoyance is this: I have a file for Spider-Man. (The first one, 2002)

All the rest were either genuinely detected or at least it left the embedded cover art so I could fix it.

But this one, along with several others in my collection (about 2500 movies and even more TV shows), it just guessed WRONG (WAY wrong in many cases) and applied some other artwork and name to the file.

So I don’t know what to search. I know the filename and path (it’s just Spiderman.m4v for goodness sakes!), but I don’t know where to search to find out what IT thinks this movie is, so I can fix it. ARGH. I’m sure it’s in there somewhere… but my collection is big enough that just finding it through luck (or brute force) seems more than I want to take on. Sure this is recorded somewhere? But where, and how do I even get to it?

Considering how much work I went through to get everything corrected that I could find, fixed, I REALLY don’t want to dump all that and rescan from scratch. And I can’t rename everything (even if I was willing to) because that would break my AppleTV, which still reads from the same files via local sharing. (The internal database would break and I’d need to repoint every file I renamed, no thanks). Or am I really fighting a losing fight on that front, and I should really just give in and use a tool or something to completely rename everything, so I no longer need to fear simply rescanning the whole collection? This is a side thought, though... if I can just find what the heck Jellyfin did with a few missing files, I'm fine for now.

Halp! :)

Dragon ball metadata issues

I have Dragon Ball setup in a folder- DragonBall (1995) [imdbid-tt0280249] with season 1 through 9 in folders inside to match the imdb page. For some reason I get some meta data for Dragonball for season 1 like name and description, then the rest of them seem to change to Dragon Ball z, with every episode set with Dragon ball z images.

I changed to anidb metadata and didn't help either, anyone have any ideas on how to sort it out. Manually changing the imdb for each episode and the refreshing metadata just puts it back to before the imdb change I made, not sure how else to sort this one out.

Custom Download Manager plugin I made

Not really trying to advertise, but just wanted to share how good of a feeling it is to add something unique to my server, even if it's just a small QoL improvement.

Most services I set up are for automation or server overview, from resource usage and media information, to watchdog scripts and organization.

I was honestly surprised Jellyfin didn't have a better download management system. It would simply notify me that a user started a download to their client, but didn't notify me when a download was complete, or whether it was even active still at all. Sometimes a user would initiate multiple downloads at a time and I'd be left wondering why the drive was being hammered until I dug around a little bit.

My solution was to write a custom plugin to monitor downloads. Although I have a little experience in Python, I don't have any experience in C, so I did use GenAI to help me through the process, so just a disclaimer, and that's why I'm not trying to advertise it, I just built it for my own enjoyment of learning how plugins are developed and a little bit more about how Jellyfin works on the backend.

My next plan is to add configuration settings for download throttling by checking stream information for active playback and throttling overall download traffic to prioritize user streams when necessary. After that, I plan to update it to the latest version of Jellyfin once I update my server.

Just thought I'd share my latest project that went a little bit further than simple media hosting and adding self-hosted services.

My friend is having this random connection issue with my server

I sare my sever with a few friends, and one of them is having this issue where the Jellyfin connection times out randomly and won't accept the ip address unless she copy + pastes it from tailscale directly.

Weirdly enough, the ip address doesn't change or disappear, but if she tries to just reconnect with the address already there, it doesn't work. It'll only work by copy + pasting from tailscale.

If anyone has any insight, I'd appreciate it. I'm new to sharing my server with friends and she's the only one it's happened to, so I'm at a loss rn as to what to look for or any settings to change or update to fix the issue.

Server ID in the jellyfin URL when using remote access

Hello,

I just exposed my jellyfin server and I want to check some stuff with you guys. Heres the setup:

  • My domain is in cloudflare under the orange cloud (I know about abusing it but for now only one person will be using) and I geoblocked it only to be accessible in my country.
  • Im using caddy to recieve the connection and reversing proxy it to the internal jellyfin ip (Ive opened port 80 and 443 for caddy on the router).
  • Both jellyfin and caddy are on LXC containers on proxmox and they are unpriviliged.
  • I set a max of 10 login atttempts per user before blocking

With that out of the way, I noticed that when I access jellyfin through the domain I get a url flag called serverID which is fllowed by an ID. Do you guys know if this info can be used to some kind of attack? Im not sure if this is a cloudflare or jellyfin info.

Also, do you guys think I can add something to make it more secure? Thanks in advance!

Why does Jellyfin use date and not originalrealeasedate or originalreleaseyear?

Does anyone want to see the year of a specific release that a few years after the initial release? or the year of a re-release or remaster?

Android app forces software decoding on AV1 (Direct Play issue)

I set up Jellyfin yesterday and it works great, but I ran into an issue.

Even if I set the preferred transcoding codec to HEVC on my Samsung device and set the bitrate to auto (or higher than original), it still uses Direct Play.

This is problematic because some of my videos are AV1, and my phone only supports software decoding for this codec. It plays fine, but it heavily drains the battery.

How can I force the server to transcode AV1 to HEVC/H.264 instead of using Direct Play on this device?

What’s your low-maintenance Jellyfin setup?

Night shifts do something to your brain where you genuinely cannot troubleshoot anything at 4am. You get home, you want something familiar on in the background while you decompress, and if the server throws an error or the client buffers you are simply not dealing with it.

Been running Jellyfin for about eight months now after getting off the streaming merrygoround, and most of the time it is fine. More than fine, actually. But I notice my setup choices are heavily shaped by the fact that I need it to be nearly brainless to use when I am exhausted.

So I am curious what decisions other people have made with that kind of use case in mind. Which clients have given you the least grief, whether you keep hardware transcoding enabled or just store everything in a format that plays direct, how you handle remote access without it becoming a whole project.

Tailscale is sorted on my end and that part has been solid. The client situation is where I feel like I am still making it up as I go. There are so many options and the quality gap between them is real but not always obvious from the outside.

What does your actual daytoday setup look like when you are not in the mood to fix anything?

Ok, what's the box I should buy for all my TVs, HELP!

I moved from Plex to Jellyfin because I was having so many issues with Plex and I didn't want to pay for hardware transcoding

Unfortunately there's no PS5 app. I use the app on the LG store on my TV (LG C1), but there are some files that refuse to play (I believe the commonality here is they're all Dolby vision, but I'm not sure); although these files play fine in the browser and I have hardware transcoding enabled.

I fucked myself over buying the Fire Stick pljus for Plex, thing is a piece of shit.

I looked at this post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/1s3m8u2/power_user_4k_streaming_device_guide/?share_id=N54hF81THHv3rLdPpRsbv&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=ioscss&utm_source=share&utm_term=1

and I'm STILL not sure what to buy, they all seem to have limitations and I can never even find the Onn Pro.

Is there a free program to batch rename files on my hard drive/NAS, so that the correct metadata, episode order etc displays?

Hi all-

I'm relatively new to jellyfin, but have been steadily building my archive for the last couple of weeks.

I ran into a small hiccup, last night. Some of the earliest files I had uploaded, were of tokusatsu shows, that I hadn't checked on in a while. Jellyfin had grabbed metadata that it thought was correct, and was closely related, but not exactly right. Was labeled under the title of a movie that I don't actually have in my collection, instead of the show. Also, the episodes were out of order.

I discovered going back through my files and my hard drive, renaming the files to be more specific helped, but obviously I have several files that are probably going to have a similar problem.

Is there a free program available somewhere that would allow me to batch rename these files on my hard drive or manually pull the correct metadata, specifically episode names? I have a lot of series in my collection, and even for ones I haven't uploaded yet, typing each individual episode name as a file name is a tedious process.

TIA.

Also, if there happens to be some sort of video tutorial somewhere, I would appreciate links.

Unable to connect jellyfin app to server but can access it via brwoser

I'm trying to connect my Jellyfin app to my server, but I'm getting an "unable to reach server" error.

I'm accessing it via a local IP address and within the local network.

When using the local IP address via a browser, it works fine, but when I input the same IP address into the app, I get the error.

However, the app can access the server via Tailscale Funnel but not the Tailscale VPN IP address of my server.

I configured my Jellyfin via CasaOS.

Any help is appreciated right now, as I can't figure out what's wrong anymore.

How to use my jellyfin server on an external network ?

Hi everyone ,

I have a jellyfin media server setup on my raspberry pi and it works really well on my local network. However, I want to use it away from home also . I currently do have tailscale setup as a reverse proxy but whenever I turn it on to use it on my raspberry pi , I am not able to connect on my local network anymore ( even not able to ssh or use any other thing using the local ip address) i want to be able to use my local ip as well as maybe tailscale of any other free options at the same time .

I am not very technical when it comes to Linux but I can understand basics. Can anyone tell me which direction I should look at to make this work and any tips that could help me ?

Thank you

Edit: I used Cloudflare it works amazingly .. thank you everyone
