Switched from Plex to Jellyfin

I was using Plex since 2019, never paid for it, but I was in love with how it look

Like everyone probably knows they are increasing the price of the lifetime pass. I don't really care about it but, one day I'm sure even the free version will be limited so here I am.

I read guides how to set it up with Kodi + artic fuse, didn't like it. I also don't like how jellyfin look, but I find someone here talking about Wholphin. So I downloaded it on my shield tv pro, link my jellyfin to it and now it's perfect! Happy to be part of the Jellyfin gang and F plex

I was told Jellyfin is ugly…

Wth? What am i missing? I cant believe how beautiful and customizable this is..i been with plex for a decade as lifetime pass user..unless Wholphin is brand new client, jellyfin is much prettier than plex? Im confused

What's wrong with AppleTV that none of Jellyfin apps are nearly as good as on other platforms?

So, right, I'm new to Jellyfin, and am willing to be educated (though I have read about 100 blogs/reviews/posts, not to mention scrolling endlessly through this subreddit, to learn the ins and outs).

I just got a micro PC this week to run as a Plex server (just on my home LAN, not beyond it), and then they made their recent announcement. I don't use Plex Pass, but the writing is on the wall for free accounts (I'm sure they'll start putting functionality behind the paywall).

So I decided to finally try Jellyfin. Not too many teething problems, and it's all up and running (kudos to the developer!). The Jellyfin Media Player on my PC, my Mac and my iPhone is really excellent and easily compares with the functionality of the Plex player, but on my 4K AppleTV, every app I've tried seems crippled in terms of functionality (I'm happy with video quality). I've tried Infuse, Reefy (paid for that one, oops), Stingray, Swiftfin and even faffed around with VLC.

The main functionality I'm missing is configuring subtitles and sorting (e.g. by genre, release date, ratings), both of which are great everywhere but on AppleTV. The Plex player on AppleTV is far superior (again, I'm talking about functionality).

I've got to assume that it's an AppleTV thing, since all the apps are quite similar in what they do do, as well as what they don't do. What is it about AppleTV that cripples them? (again, I'm very willing to be educated, I have read as much about each app as I can, but haven't had much joy).

My compromise is to just use the native Jellyfin app on my phone, and casting to my AppleTV. Not as convenient, but I get all that sweet sweet functionality.

/rant

Keep it up, Jellyfin developer, I am a great admirer of your work.

How to find out which jellyfin versions can upgrade to which other ones?

As far as I understand, some jellyfin versions will break your stuff if you are running too old of a version. Currently I am running the NAS Vendor version of jellyfin which is way behind (10.10.3) and would like to make my own docker compose and upgrade to the latest stable version. However I think I may have to upgrade to some intermediate version to have it all be stable, is there a list, about which versions in between I need to get in order to get to the newest one? I have been looking around but I cant find a list of all the major breaking updates that require certain previous versions to work.

Regarding the Jellyfin Price Increase

ref: https://www.reddit.com/r/jellyfin/comments/1thnh41/comment/omop0u7/

If you haven't seen it yet, we recently made the announcement that starting July 1, 2026, the price of "Jellyfin Premium+ One Super Unlimited (with Ads)" will increase to $0.00 USD*. There has been a lot of enthusiasm regarding charge backs, and we're simply blown away by the community's response.

As we've had a high volume of inquiries, I'd ask if you could please wait until I'm off the support email shift to reach out about this issue. I've attached our schedule so you'll know when it is safe to reach out.

Thanks, and happy streaming!

*Example price in USD. Exact pricing in other currencies may vary.

A screenshot of an Excel spreadsheet that reads \"Support Email Schedule\" in Comic Sans MS, in a WordArt outline style. Underneath is a pair of rows, reading \"Current\" (highlighted in green), and \"Next\" (highlighted in yellow). Both read \"Anthony Lavado\" beside them. That's the joke. If you're still reading this, tell me what you had for lunch today.

Free HDHomeRun guide data in Jellyfin: plugin release v0.2.0.0

I released **HDHomeRun Guide for Jellyfin v0.2.0.0**, a Jellyfin server plugin that gives HDHomeRun users free guide data directly inside Jellyfin.

This exists because Jellyfin’s Live TV guide setup usually sends people down one of two paths:

- Pay for Schedules Direct

- Bring your own XMLTV source and wire it up yourself

SiliconDust also has an XMLTV API, but their documented 14-day XMLTV feed requires a paid HDHomeRun DVR guide subscription. I wanted something simpler for Jellyfin users with HDHomeRun tuners: install a plugin, let Jellyfin find the tuner, generate the guide data, and keep it refreshed automatically.

The plugin:

- Uses your HDHomeRun tuner to access free SiliconDust guide data

- Generates Jellyfin-compatible XMLTV and M3U files

- Updates Jellyfin Live TV’s M3U/XMLTV paths

- Clears stale Jellyfin XMLTV cache entries before import

- Refreshes guide data automatically on a configurable interval

- Supports Jellyfin-side HDHomeRun discovery

- Supports the paid DVR XMLTV source too, if you have it

- Does not store `DeviceAuth` in plugin config or logs

Release v0.2.0.0 is mostly a hardening release. It promotes the current plugin line from 0.1.x to 0.2.0.0 and includes safer tuner fetching, sanitized M3U output, pinned JSON dependency handling, and a verified release build.

Release: [HDHomeRun Guide 0.2.0.0](https://github.com/stephenhoos/hdhomerun-jellyfin-guide/releases/tag/v0.2.0.0)

Install is manual for now: download `HDHomeRunGuide_0.2.0.0.zip`, extract it into Jellyfin’s plugin directory, restart Jellyfin, then configure it from **Dashboard -> Plugins -> HDHomeRun Guide**.

This is the first public release, but I’ve tested it heavily on my own Jellyfin + HDHomeRun setup and it’s been working solidly. I’d love feedback from other installs, especially Docker, Linux packages, different HDHomeRun models, and different channel lineups.

Is jellyfin making my files "corrupted and unreadable"

I've just recently started to use Jellyfin. I have an external hard drive i've been adding media to for over a year now. Went on today to update my library, and some of my shows have stopped appearing on my server, and now Windows Explorer says the files are "corrupted and unreadable" This has only started since using Jellyfin and it seems to be tv shows. Does anyone have any ideas?

Advice

Hello, I am fairly new to using Jellyfin and everything related to it. I am looking to expand my storage, I currently using a seagate portable 4tb and have Jellyfin on my main and only PC. Looking to expand so does anyone have any advice on if i should just buy a larger HDD (It has been working fine for me) or is there something else i could use? I have done research myself and heard of NAS RAID UNRAID TRUENAS DAS I do not and can not understand any of these terms. So please explain if your advice includes any of these terms. So what should I use to expand my 4tb media storage for Jellyfin? My main PC is a MSI codex R

What kind of reverse proxy hardware is enough?

To setup a reverse proxy server would something like a Raspberry Pi 4 be powerful enough or does it need to be something bigger like an Intel N100 PC?

Is it preferable to have two network jacks for an in/out type of configuration? Or does a proxy service not really care about that?

Season Titles

Is there a way to set the filenames for season titles so they will be automatically titled while still being organized and showing proper metadata (Jojo's Bizzare Adventure for example) cause i know i can just edit the metadata myself in jellyfin as ive shown, but i want something i can have set in the file names so when i upgrade my library i dont have to worry about setting these back.

Is it possible to remotely access a Jellyfin server without port forwarding or external apps (Tailscale etc.)?

I have a Jellyfin server set up for movies and TV Shows and I'm running it on my Windows PC, it works perfectly for devices on my home network however I want to configure it so I can run it out of my home, or give access to my friends and family.

At first, I tried making a reverse proxy using DuckDNS but I ran into a major problem. Due to me having 2 routers (One from my ISP, and the other I bought), I cannot make port forwarding work for the life of me. It used to work perfectly fine before, but with this setup I just can't get it to work, so I had to give up on that.

The second solution I've heard of is using something like Tailscale or Netbird, and while it does sound great, a major caveat for me is that other potential users of my server will have to install an external application, and I want this to be as friendly as it can to absolutely non tech-savvy people.

My question is, can I somehow set up remote access to my server without it requiring port-forwarding or other people installing external applications and services? It doesn't have to be a free solution, I just want something that's extremely plug and play and works.

Thanks a lot in advance!

XMLTV guide for Jellyfin + HDHomeRun TV tuners

Quick heads up that we (Silicondust) have enabled XMLTV guide for all Jellyfin users with HDHomeRun TV tuners.

Documentation: https://github.com/Silicondust/documentation/wiki/XMLTV-Guide-Data

The API is free for everyone providing the next 2 days of TV guide across all channels found by your HDHomeRun. Completely free. The channels in the guide are automatically matched to your HDHomeRun (no messing around with enabling/disabling channels on a website).

We also have 14 days of guide is available... paid, but the same price as when we launched our guide service back in 2016 ($35/year).

But if you really really want to pay us $749 we will accept, but only if hand delivered in a brown paper bag :-)

Is it time?

So my server has been going strong for a while but just today I noticed this on my television. I'm running a raspberry pi2 server and as it's 32 bit I cannot update past 10.10.7. Guess it's time for a raspberry pi3.

Switching from plex to Jellyfin

So as the title says I'm switching. I have been with Plex for about 8 years. I downloaded the jellyfin server. When I tried to run it I get an error message that pops up. Could not start Jellyfin server process after specified wait period. I uninstalled, reinstalled and rebooted the computer a few times and I always get this error. Is there a way to fix it? Also, I should know this is my Plex PC and I do not know if the two servers are butting heads with each other. I did a Google search and it said they work fine together so I do not think it that is it. Also, the log file does not seem to be updating.

Trying to fix show metadata, now Jellyfin doesn't recognize the show at all!

Hey all,

I have been running Jellyfin on ZimaOS for a couple of months, drama free. Had a few metadata issues that were pretty much all my fault that I quickly found the remedy to.

Last night, I added a second season of a show, using standard show name folder, plus folders for season 01 and season 02. First season already existing, has all the correct metadata pulled in, including episode descriptions. Second season had each episode named as the file name with no descriptions.

Did a little searching and saw a recommendation to remove the show folder from the root of shows, update the library with a scan. The add the show back to shows folder and rescan. Once done, Jellyfin refused to add the show back.

What could cause this? Appreciate any input on this.

Thanks!

Can I Protect Access to User Profiles With Pin?

I just got started with Jellyfin and have been playing around with the Android TV app. I want to have a kids' profile that anyone can access, but keep my profile behind a pin. Is that possible either natively or as a plugin?

I've only been able to find old feature requests regarding this topic.

Best setup guide? Basic user

I've been using Plex for over a decade.

I've never needed any kind of technical wizardry to allow my family to use my server.

I paid $5 a long time ago so I have been isolated from them charging to watch remotely for awhile, but now as everyone knows no one can use my server anymore and I even struggle sometimes streaming on my own network if the device is not on the correct SSID.

Anyway... I'm not tech stupid, but reading through some of the posts here idk that I feel comfy setting up jellyfin without someone holding my hand.

Is there an easy guide out there to point me to?

Is there an easy way without any extra stuff for family to be able to just put jellyfin on their TV via app and use my server?

Obviously the goal is to be able to easily share my digital library with less than a handful of people for free.

Am I asking too much of jellyfin?

Android Jellyfin app and Tailscale won't work, but browser on Android phone does.

Things I've done up to this point so far:

  1. Created an inbound rule for my firewall for the port.

  2. Checked "Allow remote connections to this server"

  3. Whitelisted my phones Tailscale IP address in Jellyfin.

  4. Have Jellyfin and Tailscale running on both my PC and my phone at the same time.

  5. Typing the Tailscale IP address for my PC into a Chrome browser on my phone connects to Jellyfin and the log in works accordingly.

When adding the Tailscale IP address to the android Jellyfin app it brings me to the sign on screen and when attempting to sign in I get Connection Failure. Also, quick connect does not work either. I'm perplexed why it works in a browser but not in the app.

Jellyfin, RasPi 4, and WiFi enter a bar…

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for advice from people that know more about computer hardware than me. I have a successful Jellyfin server run over Ethernet on an ancient MacMini in my apartment.

I’m going to be moving for three months for work, and will not have an opportunity to hardwire an internet line to that Mac (nor can I bring the machine with me.) At the same time, I’m leaving my current house and will get a new one when I return. So I can’t just leave the server running and remote in.

I’m considering a Raspberry Pi 4, an SSD, and connecting over WiFi at my office or other accommodation. I’m not looking to do anything crazy, just to keep my server running. What considerations should I know about Jellyfin, RasPi 4, and WiFi before I leave? I’m not heartset on the RasPi, but cost is a concern.

Thank you all!!
