You lose phone reception in certain buildings because the owners want you to use their ‘public WiFi’, so they can steal your data
They set up a virtual faraday cage around their place of business, then paste QR codes advertising ‘free WiFi’ everywhere. Patrons have no choice but to scan the code and enter their email etc if they want access to the internet.
Basically they steal your data to steal your data.
