2+ weeks in Rome and Florence, how to fill out time?

Rome: December 18 - 27

Florence: December 27 - Jan 4

I'm travelling to Italy in December with my husband, 4YO and 7MO, and extended family, and we're all staying together in a hotel in Rome, then an Airbnb in Florence. For the sake of ease and stability we are basing in these cities for the duration of the trip and will branch out for day trips from these spots. This is my first time to Italy and second time out of Australia, and I don't anticipate I'll have the opportunity for much more travel anytime soon, so I want to make the most of it and am feeling overwhelmed in my planning.

I'm looking for recommendations for towns to visit by train or bus from Rome and Florence and how long it is recommended to stay there, ones that can be combined into one day, what to see in these towns, etc. and how to make the most of it during winter with little ones.

Travel/cold weather baby wearing

I'm travelling to Italy this December and am wondering how best to babywear my (to be) 7 month old in the cold weather. I'm from Perth, Australia so I am used to dry, mild winters. We're staying in Rome and Florence and will be there for 18 days, and plan to do a lot of sightseeing and in and out of buildings. Should I buy a baby wearing jacket? How do others in colder temperatures wear their babies in the winter and protect from wind and rain?
