Short When Replacing Outlet
Electricians,
I am replacing an outlet in my bed room to a tamper-resistant one. I shut the breaker off, and attached the neutral and hot wires. But when I attach the ground wire to my outlet, the oven in my kitchen shorted, but quickly came back on. A few hours later I heard a loud click from the kitchen area but nothing appeared to shut off. Will my house burn down?
The outlet that I was working on is in a metal box. The previous electrician attached the ground wire to the box but not the outlet itself. I added a splice from the neutral wire screwed into the metal box into my outlet, that is when the oven shut off but came back on. My oven is on a different circuit than the outlet.
My concern is that I have a lot of old fabric insulated wires throughout my house. As well as old flex metal conduit l. There's a lot of splicing and janky wiring. The oven and the outlet have new Romex though so I assumed it was a safe ground wire. I have a multimeter, and there is no voltage between the box and the ground wire.
Thanks for the help!
