Is black smearing on VA monitors really that bad?

Hi everyone,

I’m looking to buy a 34-inch ultrawide monitor, but I’m having a hard time deciding between VA and IPS panels.

Right now, I’m using an old 24-inch Full HD IPS monitor from around 2013, so almost anything would probably feel like an upgrade. However, I’m not sure how noticeable the switch from IPS to VA would be, especially because I’m used to IPS.

The price difference is quite big where I live. VA models are usually around 30% cheaper than similar IPS models, so VA is much more tempting from a value perspective.

However, I keep reading about black smearing on VA monitors, especially in darker scenes. Is it really that bad in normal use, or is it mostly exaggerated? I would mainly use the monitor for gaming, general desktop use, browsing, and reading text.

I’m also wondering how VA handles black text on a white background. Is there noticeable smearing or blur when scrolling pages with text, or is it only a problem in dark games?

I know VA has better contrast and deeper blacks, while IPS usually has better response times and viewing angles. But considering the 30% price difference, I’m trying to understand whether IPS is actually worth paying extra for, or if a decent VA panel is good enough.

For people who have used 34-inch VA ultrawide monitors: did black smearing bother you in games or everyday use? Would you buy VA again, or would you spend more for IPS?

Thanks for any advice.

Old LG Monitor Randomly Flickers and Sometimes Won't Wake From Sleep Any Ideas to fix this?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to troubleshoot an old 24" LG IPS monitor (around 13 years old, 60 Hz) and I'm running out of ideas.

Setup:

  • Intel GPU (B570 I dont have integrated gpu on cpu)
  • Monitor connected via DisplayPort-to-VGA cable
  • Windows freshly installed
  • Latest GPU and motherboard drivers installed

I also have a second monitor that's very similar and connected the same way (DisplayPort to VGA), and that one works perfectly.

Problems with the LG monitor:

  • It randomly flickers from time to time.
  • Changing the VGA cable and adapter made no difference.
  • Trying different power outlets didn't help.
  • Reinstalling Windows didn't help.
  • Sometimes after the PC goes to sleep, the monitor won't turn back on.
  • In those cases, I have to repeatedly press the monitor's power button for several minutes before it finally starts working.
  • When I press the power button, the screen often flashes/blinks once and immediately goes black again.

Now about second monitor:

  • The second monitor works fine on the same PC,
  • Different cables produce the same issue (I suppose the cables are fine),
  • The power cable seems fine (tried with difrent ones same issue),
  • The system was freshly installed,

I'm starting to think the monitor itself may be failing.

Has anyone seen symptoms like this before? Could it be bad capacitors in the power supply, a failing inverter/backlight, or something else common on older LG monitors? I dont want to throw it away because its good enough for me but Im losing patience :(

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
