Android Studio is now fully functional on ARM64 Linux

I successfully rebuilt Android Studio librarieslayoutlib_jni.so and libandroid_runtime.so for AArch64.

This fixes the XML Layout Editor, menu and resource previews, and Compose Preview on Linux ARM64. I believe this closes the last major functionality gap between Android Studio on ARM64 versus x86_64.

As far as emulators go, Ika works great on Apple Silicon. If someone wants broader support, rebuilding Ika for a different ARM64 platform should not be be a too heavy a lift.

Tested and working on:

  • MacBook Pro M1 running Asahi Fedora 44
  • Debian 13 (Trixie) on 2018 Razer Phone 2 (via Trixie.apk)

The install script was tested in Debian 13 and Fedora 44 chroot instances, it should be fine with proot environments as well.

Ika Virtual Desktop // Build Android 16 on x86-64 or Apple Silicon with only 16GB RAM

Ika Virtual Desktop

Ika /ee-kah/ - Japanese for "cuttlefish" - began as an effort to run the Cuttlefish Android emulator on Fedora Asahi Remix (upstream included tooling for Debian only). It has since evolved into a full-blown desktop operating environment for Apple Silicon and x86-64 hosts. The project scope changed but the name stuck.

Features

  • LineageOS 23.2 (Android 16) reimagined as a desktop-first operating system.
  • Dynamic display window resizing that preserves DPI settings.
  • Accelerated GPU rendering with OpenGL ES and Vulkan support.
  • Native builds on Asahi Linux and x86-64 systems with as little as 16 GB of RAM.
  • Flexible build options for MindTheGappsmicroG, or a de-Googled ROM

See the project page for more info on ika-build for x86-64 or ARM architectures.

Testing a new Android Emulator

I have been working on a fork of the Cuttlefish Android emulator that some of you might find useful.

One of the things I need to determine is how well it works with an nVidia card; I don't own one to test... but It should work!

The project page has more info and Fedora 44 RPMs. If you give this a whirl my question is: Does Asphalt Legends work with an nVidia GPU? Game compatiblity is meh at this early stage so other games may not work, but I know Asphalt runs well on my mini-PC's Radeon 780M.
