Why is Trump ordering removal of the EMALS catapults on future aircraft carriers in favour of reverting to the old steam powered system?

I REALLY REALLY do NOT want any comments from the “I love Trump no matters what he does” or “I hate Trump no matter what he does” crowds. You have plenty of other places to vent on the interweb.

This is a legit question - are there actual issues (operational, not start up) with EMALS technology? I know the supposed advantages re higher cycle time, less men to operate, etc. But would there actually be some pros to going back to steam?

I also note that the new Chinese carriers use an electric system and the French will also use a version of EMAL tech on their new carrier.

Trapped by gravity!

There was a post over in r/theydidthemath that was commenting that because many of the earth like planets we are discovering are “super earths” (massive) planets that even if there was intelligent life there, they would never be able to achieve orbit. This is due to the fact you could never build a big enough rocket to reach escape velocity. It’s an intriguing idea - as you make a rocket bigger to hold more fuel it gets heavier, so it needs more fuel to lift the weight cause it’s heavier. You get into a cycle that you can’t engineer around. So you are trapped by your high gravity environment.

The OP over there noted that the First Contact novel Cold Eyes has this premise as a key plot element. Here is the post I made over on that subreddit:

“Cold Eyes is a good read. The premise is as described and it creates a real dilemma when humans visit. Should they go down? Can they get back up? The planet also has to lack fissile material.

I recommend the first contact series of books. They are all stand alone stories based on the plot of a first contact scenario.”

Thought I would post here as I really like this community and like the book recommendations!

Anyone ever have any actual luck getting a lost item back from Princess?

I will begin by admitting this was my fault.

The night before we left Sky Princess in FLL we packed up and I decided (cause I’m so smart) to leave my new fancy dinner jacket hanging in the closet so it wouldn’t get wrinkled in the suitcase (we walked off with our suitcases early). And you guessed it - forgot it on the boat. I remembered while we still in the terminal, but after we had tapped out and left the boat. I asked to be let back on but no go. Which I get. And I was reassured that all I had to do was fill out the on line form and it would get back to me. What a joke.

The form was easy to fill out and submit, but after that all I got was a series of “we are still looking” emails. And “don’t call us we will call you”. I called repeatedly on the actual day to tell them exactly where it was, and tried calling multiple times afterward. Then an eventual (months later) - we couldn’t find it, closing the file, sucks to be you email.

It is crystal clear they could not have cared less. Just wondering if my experience is unique or par for the course?

I will end by admitting I know this was my fault!

Anybody else a fan of The Murderbot Diaries?

And if so, did you also watch the Apple TV series? I really liked the books. I think the stories are a great blend of human behaviours, mixed with evil corporations, incompetent government, mixed with humour, mixed with the completely implausible. The Sanctuary Moon side story is a hoot.

I tore through the books and now I am thinking of subscribing to Apple TV just so I can watch. Worth it?

Thanks!!

What’s happening on Pat Bay Hiway

Near the Quadra overpass?

EDIT: if you are headed north out of downtown you are in trouble. Police are diverting all traffic onto Quadra exit.
