Where did the trend of hugging the center line start?

Where did the trend of hugging the center line start?

I've been riding for almost 30 years and just in the last 5 or 6 I've noticed a huge uptick in (almost exclusively) old boomers on bagger bikes intentionally riding right on the yellow line. I don't remember this being such a thing 10 or 15 years ago, but now almost every old guy on a Harley that I see out is glued to the center line. Where did this trend start and what's the logic behind it?

Edit: I'm well aware of the reasons why it is sometimes ideal to ride close to the center line, and I'm well aware of the inside tire track generally being the ideal cruising location. This post is specifically about guys cruising RIGHT on top of the center line for no apparent reason.
