Potatoes - CYP2D6 - Medication

Hi all.

Just sharing something that I discovered that might touch on some histamine issues.

I did a full genetic testing and discovered that I’m CYP2D6 null (no enzime present). This enzyme is responsible for about 30% of all medications, from psychiatry, to blood pressure, etc and causes different reactions with a lot of medication, some you cannot convert to the active substance (cannot use codeine or tramadol because my body can’t convert it) or can have much more blood substance concentration that what it should be. This might be a future post.

The thing that was more surprising, was potatoes. 🥔

Potatoes have a toxic substance called solanine. It is present mainly on green potatoes, the skin, sprouts, and eyes. You should also not use any the water when cooking them, as the water gets contaminated.

Being null (like me) actually means that the substance accumulates to a staggering +1887% and in poor metabolizers +74% when compared to normal metabolizers. Link One thing quite important here, besides the genetic side: There are many medications, that actually change the enzime activity because they inhibit it. As an example: Bupropion (Wellbutrin), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Paroxetine (Paxil), Quinidine, Terbinafine

What that means: That there is a likely chance that nulls, are in a chronic toxic exposure for that substance since birth or from the moment that they start taking one of the inhibitors, and that probably translates to sustained chronic inflammation, where it is hard to actually pin point what is happening. In my personal case, I have spent all my life trying to discover what foods were causing me problems, mood swings, etc.

So it might be good to at least know what is your status, or if the medication you are taking is actually inhibiting the enzime, as potatoes become an issue and might be triggering MCAS or histamine crises if the values are too high. In my personal case I will stop eating potatoes and products dedicated from potatoes.

Hope this helps.
