I Watched The Perfect Storm (2000)
This is a blend of a docudrama & movie. The six manned Andrea Gail sword fishing vessel set sail in September 1991 wanting a large haul. They fished the Grand Banks then headed out to Flemish Cap. A large haul is what they got but then their ice machine began to malfunction. They had to decide to wait out The Perfect Storm and their catch could spoil or head for home into it to get paid for their haul. They chose to head for home. The Perfect Storm was a collision of a cold front from the Midwest, the remnants of Hurricane Grace, & a massive developing Nor'easter.
The movie takes dramatic license of course. There is no way of knowing what happened among the crew since the Andrea Gail was never found and there were no survivors. That isn't a spoiler but a well known fact. Why watch a story that is already known? To see another adaptation of it.
The film is dedicated to all those who lost their lives at sea from Gloucester, Massachusetts since 1623. That's the home port and is a family of blood and not for their men & women who earn money on the water. The Crow's Nest was a gathering place and owned by the family of Bobby Shatford (portrayed by Mark Wahlberg). His mother Ethel (portrayed by Janet Wright) operated it during the film and it has remained in the Shatford family. Ethel Shatford Preston, since deceased, was said to have been a mother of many.
Bobby Shatford's relationship with girlfriend Christina Cotter (portrayed by Diane Lane) also made it into the movie. That was the romance part. She along with others was shown wishing her loved one didn't have to work another trip, worrying about him while he was away, and mourning him afterwards.
Bob Brown (portrayed by Michael Ironside) owned the Andrea Gail & sister sword ship Hannah Boden along with two lobster fishing vessels. The Hannah Boden was then also out fishing but made it safely home. Its captain, Linda Greenlaw (portrayed by Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio) was in radio contact with Billy Tyne (portrayed by George Clooney), the captain of the Andrea Gail. Linda Greenlaw is now an author.
The last known contact with the Andrea Gail was on October 28th, 1991. Its emergency beacon washed up on Sable Island, Nova Scotia on November 6th, 1991. The coast guard called off the search on November 9th, 1991. The Andrea Gail has yet to be located.
