Seating depth testing and RPR continues to impress!

I have a current gen Ruger RPR Custom Shop in 6.5CM that has been treating me really good for about a year or so. The rifle shoots anything I throw at it pretty damn well and has been used to make hits at a mile by four different shooters. I have been using a 140 Berger under 40gr of H4350 and it shoots about half MOA most of the time with 10 shot groups at 200.
Anyway, I decided I want to do some competitive shooting with it, so I felt moving up to a heavier bullet may be helpful to reduce my wind call errors. I bought some Berger 153.5s and worked up a ladder. Settled on 40 grains (maybe the gun just likes 40gr of H4350🤷‍♂️) and shot the attached 10 shot group pic yesterday for verification. Today I went out and shot 7 round groups at 100 of four different seating depths. They all look like decent groups, but the part that just blows my mind is if you lay them all over each other and mark the worst shots… it’s still .93 MOA for 28 shots… and the best is 0.4MOA. I love this rifle and am very pleased with it. I have a 6 Dasher in an MPA Matrix Pro2 on order that should be here soon. I sure hope it can beat this run of the mill RPR🤣

My first high-power match at 300, 500, and 600 yards — looking for advice

TLDR:
I have match experience to 200yards, general experience to much further. Gun and ammo is well tuned. 4DOF is updated. Not so experienced on wind. Do I need to have my chrono with me? Do I make quick shots when wind is steady… stuff like that.

My first high-power match at 300, 500, and 600 yards — looking for advice
Next Saturday I’m shooting my first high-power match at 300, 500, and 600 yards. I’ve done plenty of shooting and reloading over the years including 100-yard WWI and WWII military rifle competitions and 200-yard reduced target vintage sniper rifle competitions, but this will be my first actual competition at these distances, so I’m trying to go into it as prepared as possible and would appreciate advice from people who have done it.
I’ll be shooting a 6.5 Creedmoor Ruger Precision Rifle Custom Shop with 140gr Berger Hybrids at about 2,725 fps. The rifle and load are well proven at 100 and 200 yards, including good 10-shot groups (most under 0.5 MOA and nearly all under 0.6 MOA, with dozens of 10-shot groups recorded) and very low SDs, so I’m not changing anything at the last minute.
I’ve entered all of my actual rifle/load data into Hornady 4DOF and have my corrections for each distance. I’ve verified a solid 100-yard zero, made sure my turrets are where they belong, and I’m doing all of my normal brass prep and loading procedures so the ammunition should be as consistent as I can make it.
The big thing I’m studying now is wind. At the distances I normally shoot groups, wind generally hasn’t mattered enough for me to spend much time learning to read it. I know that changes substantially at 500 and 600 yards, so I’ve been working on understanding what different wind speeds and angles should do to the bullet. My current plan is to dial my elevation and use the reticle for wind corrections rather than constantly adjusting the windage turret.
Assuming the weather isn’t completely ridiculous, I’m setting a 575–580 out of 600 as my personal score goal. Maybe that turns out to be too ambitious for a first match, but I’d rather have a real benchmark and see where I land. I have shot at these distances and beyond recreationally, including hits at a mile at multiple locations; what’s new to me is shooting these distances under match conditions.
For those who regularly shoot matches at these distances, what should I be paying attention to that I probably haven’t thought about yet?
I’m particularly interested in how you approach your sighters ( I am allowed unlimited at 300, but only 2 at 500 and 600), how you establish your initial wind call, how much you react to a shot moving horizontally, whether you try to shoot quickly when you recognize a stable wind condition, and what rookie mistakes tend to cost people points.
I’d also appreciate any advice about match procedure, etiquette, equipment to have beside me on the line, or little things experienced shooters take for granted that a first-timer might not think about.
Basically, I want to show up with the rifle, ammunition, zero, and ballistic homework already handled so I can concentrate on learning how to shoot the match.
What am I forgetting?

How much throat erosion would you say this barrel has? General condition just forward of the chamber?

Looking for some opinions from people who have spent more time looking through borescopes than I have.
This 6.5CM barrel has roughly 700 rounds through it. I just cleaned it thoroughly, including JB Bore Paste, so what you’re seeing should be pretty close to bare steel rather than carbon/copper fouling. Most of those 700 rounds have been with my pet load of 40gr H4350 under a 140 Berger HT.
The three photos are approximately:
Throat/leade immediately forward of the chamber
About 3/4” farther down the bore, where the lands are becoming more defined
About 1” forward of the throat, showing the rifling more clearly
I’m curious how you guys would characterize the amount of throat erosion/fire cracking in the first photo, and what you think of the general condition of the bore as it progresses forward in photos 2 and 3.
The barrel still shoots very well, and I’m not contemplating replacing it — I’m going to keep shooting it until performance tells me otherwise. I’m mainly interested in learning what experienced eyes see here and how you would describe this level of wear.
For additional context, the barrel continued gaining velocity for quite a while and only seems to have fully stabilized within roughly the last 200 rounds.

So: light, moderate, heavy throat erosion for ~700 rounds? Anything noteworthy in the lands/rifling farther forward?

Made a range trip today to verify accuracy and test my first suppressor!

took my RPR in 6.5 CM and my MPA Hybrid Hunter in .300 PRC to North Springs Shooting Range in Utah two weeks ago. I put roughly 150–200 rounds through each rifle getting them ready for the trip. The hard work paid off, as all four shooters made numerous hits at a mile with both rifles… mission accomplished.
I let my rifles tell me when they need to be cleaned, so I loaded a few rounds and headed to the range today. The RPR was shot at 100 yards and the MPA at 200. I normally shoot my verification groups at 200, but my first suppressor arrived today, so I wanted a 100-yard baseline with the Scythe installed.
Both rifles told me they were just fine and didn’t need a shower yet. 🤣 The MPA screamed it at me, while the RPR just whispered it. I’m definitely liking this suppressor thing.
Both rifles are now around 300–350 rounds since their last cleaning, and I’ll continue shooting them until they tell me otherwise. Even better, both loads maintained single-digit SDs (5.9 and 6.2), so they’re still ready to ring steel at a mile if I ask them to.
Overall, I’m extremely happy with how today’s range trip turned out.

Looking for real-world experience: 30 Sherman Mag vs. 300 Norma vs. 300 Norma AI vs. 300 RUM

I’ve reached the point where I’m looking beyond the mile. My current goal is to build something that’s comfortable at 2,200+ yards at sea level without resorting to stacked bases or excessive cant to obtain the required elevation, while still being practical enough to shoot regularly. I’d prefer to keep the optic mounted conventionally rather than chasing elevation with hardware.
For reference, my current “big gun” is a .300 PRC. It has treated me extremely well, and I’ve had multiple impacts at a mile at two different ranges. It pushes the 245 Berger LRHT at approximately 2,850 fps from a 26” barrel. Accuracy is excellent, and I’m essentially at the rifle’s pressure ceiling. I can gain a little more speed, but pressure signs start showing up before I gain enough velocity to make it worthwhile.
Because of that, I’m looking at stepping up in case capacity rather than trying to wring every last fps out of the PRC.
The cartridges I’m considering are:
30 Sherman Magnum
300 Norma Magnum
300 Norma Improved (40°)
300 Remington Ultra Magnum
The rifle will be built on an ARC CDG with a 30 MOA rail and an MTU contour (or heavier) barrel in the 28–30” range.
I’m not looking for internet ballistics, ballistic calculator screenshots, or published load data. I’ve already read plenty of that. What I’m really after is real-world experience from people who have actually spent time behind these cartridges.
A few questions:
What velocities are you honestly seeing with 245 Berger LRHTs, 250 A-Tips, or similar heavy bullets?
Barrel length and twist?
Powder(s) that ended up working best?
Any feeding or magazine quirks?
Brass life?
If you’ve owned more than one of these, which would you build again and why?
I’m less concerned with burning another 10–15 grains of powder than I am with getting a meaningful performance increase over my PRC. If I’m going to build another rifle, I want enough gain that it isn’t simply a more expensive version of what I already own.
For the purposes of this discussion, I’m not interested in stepping up to a .375-class cartridge or anything requiring a larger-than-Lapua bolt face. I’m trying to determine what the best next step is while staying in the .30-caliber family.
At the moment, I’m leaning toward the 30 Sherman Magnum because I like the concept. That said, if the consensus from people who have actually run these cartridges is that a 300 Norma AI or 300 RUM provides a substantially larger performance window with heavy bullets, I’m happy to be convinced otherwise.
Looking forward to hearing from those who have actually put rounds downrange with these cartridges.

I bought these because they are USA made. Paid 3x what China stuff is. Am I right to be irritated?

Edit 2:
PEC responded to the email from my original Edit below. Noted that this is within manufacturing tolerances. So, I guess it is what it is and I will return and purchase something else.

First off the mounting holes were obviously drilled by a 6 year old with how much they are off. Secondly, the body is squeezed down by the retaining fastener making it seem like they use this same body for different sets and just squeeze it down to fit. To me, if I wanted lack of attention to detail that bad, I would just buy Chinesium 💩. Am I being overly critical? They just arrived from Amazon and I am really close to returning them.

Edit; sent this email to PEC. Awaiting a response.

I recently purchased one of your feeler gauge sets through Amazon. When it arrived, I immediately noticed that the individual leaves are significantly misaligned because the pivot holes appear to have been drilled in slightly different locations on each blade.
I occasionally need to measure very shallow areas, and the amount of misalignment makes that more difficult.
My question is simply this: Is what I’m seeing within PEC’s normal manufacturing tolerances, or is it possible that I received a counterfeit product through Amazon?
I’m not looking to complain—I just need to know the best course of action. If this is not representative of your quality standards, I’ll return this set and purchase another one directly from PEC. If, however, this is considered acceptable within your manufacturing tolerances, I’ll simply return it and purchase a different brand that better suits my needs.

I’ve been avoiding this 1 mile story due to scrutiny and disbelief.

I had posted a day or two ago about me taking my brothers in law to North Springs range in Utah for a very successful 1 mile outing. This is a portion of the story I left out… because it’s just so unbelievable. The rifle in the pic is a Remington 700, 30-06 built in 1973. This gun has taken MANY deer and a couple years ago the stock cracked. My BIL purchased a decent fiberglass stock for it and I gave him a Burris XTR II I had laying around to replace the 35 year old 3-9 Tasco it had. Anyway, he tells me he would like to take it with us and see if he can hit 500 yards… I assure him that’s possible and 1000 is by no means out of the question. We shot some Hornady 168 ELD-M match ammo and it was grouping 1.5+ MOA. Then he grabbed some hunting ammo that had 168 Berger hunting bullets and it loved them. .75 MOA give or take. Anyway, we all get verified competent at 1000yards and given permission to go to the mile range and my BIL asks if he can try the 700 before we leave… I’m like sure. I had put all the data in 4DOF ahead of time and he nailed 600, 800 and 1000 the first time. Then I had him try the smaller 1.5 MOA target at a thousand and he nailed it twice. He was super happy. Anyway, we all head to the mile and over the course of an hour or so, we all have hit a mile with two separate rifles and my BIL says, can you please give the mile a try with the 700. I already knew the DOPE, it was all the way up plus 7 MOA hold over. Anyway, I’m like sure. Put it on bags and took aim, squeeze off a round and I see splash about a foot right of the target. I’m like WTF!? Anyway, I take the second shot and the spotter says “I didn’t see anything” and I’m like “I think I hit it! Listen!!!” Sure as shit, a couple seconds later you hear the report😳. Then the rifles owner wanted to give it a try… third shot… I couldn’t hear a report for background chatter I am 100% sure the the target was swinging😳. I am by no means saying this rifle is a legitimate mile rifle, but I will say on this day this 53 year old hunting rifle hit a 1 mile target 2 times out of 5 attempts. If I hadn’t been there , I would have a hard time believing it… and I don’t expect everyone here to believe me, but I will tell you 100% I hit that damn 36” gong with standard Remington 700 30-06 on my second shot… I was dumbfounded! So my one BIL and I both had successful 1 mile target hits with three separate rifles in one day…. One of them being the oddest damn thing I have ever experienced.

New respect for 6.5CM at a mile!

I lugged two rifles from Va to Ut to take my brothers in law on a long range shooting experience at North Springs shooting range. I had previously had my RPR in 6.5CM shooting great at 1200yards, but not even showing splash at a mile. I worked on the load and tightened it up considerably since my last long range outing as well as went from a 20 MOA rail to a 30 MOA rail( this outing was at about 2300 ft above sea level). Additionally, the air at 6300ft is much more friendly to a bullet than 2300. I also took my 300PRC with the expectation that we get on target to 1200ish with the RPR, then move on to the 300PRC for 1500 and 1760. Anyway, once we got verified to move from the 1000yard range to the mile, we set up shop and my one brother in law says he wants to try the mile with my RPR. I try to explain that the 6.5 CM is at the ragged edge of its capabilities at that distance and he should try the big rifle, but he liked how friendly and comfortable the RPR was. Anyway, dial up the DOPE and 3 shots in, he’s ringing steel at a mile.🤨
Well, then the other BIL wants to try… boom, a few shots later… ringing steel at a mile. Long story short we all were pretty consistently making hits on a 36” gong at a mile. The 300PRC barely got any attention besides from me. I have always heard the 6.5CM is running the ragged edge at a mile, but I had an AWESOME experience with it today. As a side note all four of us hit a 36” gong at a mile numerous times with both rifles… but mostly with 6.5CM. Definitely not the outcome I was expecting! The pictures are of my RPR and a 6.5CM vs 300PRC.

Traveling with rifles and ammo?

Going to Utah Sunday for a visit and am taking two rifles and hand loaded ammo. I think I have all the info on the rifles… hard case, locked with non tsa locks and declared. I think inhale the ammo… in ammo case, not lose 5kg per traveler. This is where my question comes… I am going to be about a pound over if I take everything I want to… how closely do they weigh it..?

Anyone Familiar with North Springs Range in Price Utah?

I am going to Utah next week and taking two of my rifles with me. Some family members and I are going to head to North Springs. I have the equipment to hit a mile (the one rifle has done it with room to spare) but if the winds are too bad… well, you know. Anyway, my plan is to get there as they open and get my family comfy out to 1000yards by about 10:30, then hopefully take some mile shots before the winds effects picks up. I understand the winds get worse as the day goes on? Does this sound like a decent plan? Also, does anyone know target sizes at 1000 yards and up? Thanks for any feedback!

I would like input on this outside of the box idea!

I got into the Long range thing after I retired last year. I currently have a 300 PRC that I have stretched to a mile a 6.5Creedmoor RPR I’ve stretched a 1200 yards and a seven SAUM I’m actively working up a load for. Additionally, I have a Matrix Pro 2 in 6 Dasher on order. I own many World War I and World War II rifles that I’ve collected over the years and I’ve burnt more powder through 30-06 barrels than anything else. I’ve got a Zermat long action TL3 with 30MOA rail on order due to be here in January. I intend to top it off with a razor GENII 36x and put it in a BA pro comp Chassis. I want to order a 30-32” MTU barrel in standard 30-06 with a custom throat for 230 Berger LRTH and load with Retumbo or H1000 and see if I can push this to a mile with good consistency. I don’t have quickload, but I am pretty sure through all of my research, I can push that bullet to 2600ish FPS safely. I would appreciate feedback back on this idea, even if it’s to tell me it’s a dumb idea, just tell me why. Thanks in advance.

What is this Masterpiece arms Hybrid hunter part?

Like the title says what is this part? I took the action out of the chassis so I can do some maintenance which I’ve done before but when I turned the chassis upside down, this fell out. That did not happen the last time and I have no idea where this part goes. Any assistance would be appreciated. I included the picture of the chassis both with the magazine inserted and without if that helps at all. Feel free to call me the neighborhood idiot.

UPDATE: Thank you to IraqiHammer…Sir, I owe you a beer!

Would like input on my scope situation.

I currently have an RPR in 6.5 CM with a Razor GEN2 4.5-27X56 and an MPA Hybrid Hunter in 300PRC with a Razor GEN3 6-36X56. I do not do PRS (yet, we will see) I just put holes in paper, infrequently at distances up to a mile, but usually only out to 200 (thats the distance at my local range). I currently have an MPA Matrix Pro2 in 6 Dasher on order that should be here the end of July and just figured I would keep an eye out for deals on the scope I get for it between now and then. I would like to get another Razor, but I really like the high magnification on the Golden Eagle (I really like Vortex products and have used their warranty twice with ZERO issues, I would need some really GOOD reasons to move to another manufacturer). Anyway, what is your input on the scope another Razor or the Golden Eagle. Its worth noting that have a Viper PST GEN2 5-25 kicking around the shop... I suppose I could throw that on the RPR and move the Razor Gen 2 to the new Dasher? Obviously expenditure is of some concern, but not necessarily the main concern. I appreciate any constructive feedback, thank you!

MPA hybrid hunter POI shift and loss of accuracy. SOLVED!

Earlier today I posted about my rifle not shooting well following removal from chassis and reinstallation. It was taken down due to my claims of it being a sub 0.5 MOA rifle and not having back up documentation. Anyway… I disassembled it again and the action screws felt loose, but I know I torqued them properly. I also found some indication of rubbing between the action and chassis as seen in pics 7 and 8. I cleaned everything up, and very carefully reassembled it and then added a little more oomph to the action screws… problem solved!!! (IDK what I did wrong when I put it together 2 days ago🤷‍♂️). Anyway, pic 1 rifle. Pic 2 and 3 are 6 targets I shot today, the top two targets are at 100 the bottom targeted are at 200. No scope adjustments, just resetting of the action… this is now the same POI as before the problem started. Yes, I know the 200 yarder 10 shot is a little more than 0.5 MOA… 🤷‍♂️. Anyway, happy with my rifle again! I have a Matrix Pro II in 6 dasher on order from MPA… super excited to get it as I hope it will out shoot this one considerably 😁.

MPA hybrid hunter loss of accuracy and POI shift question?

Have had this rifle for a couple months. It has consistently shot sub 0.5 MOA 10 shot groups and has successfully made hits on target at a mile. I am new to chassis rifles so my overall question may seem dumb, but I don’t know. I took it out of the chassis (for the first time after about 350 rounds) for maintenance and cleaning. I reassembled IAW MPA instructions, which are as follows.
Place action in chassis insert forward screw then aft screw both just loosely.
Set action on butt stock, tighten front to 25 in/lbs then rear.
Finally, tighten front to 65 in/lbs then the rear.
I took it to the range today and POI has shifted about 1.25 MOA straight down and accuracy has degraded to just over 1 MOA for 5 shot groups. Before I just start disassembling and redoing 💩, I was curious if you guys had any input on where I may have gone wrong? Also, when I removed the action, the screws definitely seemed tighter than 65 in/lbs. thanks in advance.

6 Dasher Lapua brass availability.

I just ordered a 6 Dasher and I have about 8 weeks before the rifle gets here. I want to get a head jump on its arrival and subsequent range time so I started sourcing components. I have the powder and the bullets are easy to get. However, I want to use Lapua brass, but can’t find it at my normal suppliers and google searches have been fruitless. I can get Alpha brass, but I just know that I like Lapua. Also, the gun was just to grab your attention AAAAND, it’s a duplicate of my freshly ordered gun 😁

Still loving my RPR 6.5CM AND MPA 300 PRC rifles.

Both of these rifles had several hundred rounds through them and I just felt it was time to clean them. Took them both and fully decarboned and decoppered them all the way to bare steel. Went to the range and fouled them both with 10 rounds then did 10 shot groups at 200 yards. The RPR gave me 0.65 MOA FOR 10 rounds and the MPA Hybrid Hunter did 0.48 MOA for 10 rounds. These things rock. Currently kicking around getting an MPA PMR Pro in 7 PRC for shits and grins and putting 15-60 Vortex Golden eagle on it.

EDIT: For lack of proof reading and autocorrect making me sound retarded.

Old cutting board question.

I made a cutting board in HS around 1989-1990. I gave it to my mom and it stayed there until her passing in 2008. At that point my brother got the house and the board stayed there. It was used frequently but NEVER had any maintenance done. Last time I visited I asked if I could have it for my wife and he gave it to me. It was in absolute POOR shape. So I sanded it down to nice raw wood and then gave it a 24 hour food grade mineral oil bath. I pulled it out this morning and wiped off the excess, buffed it and then let it rest. I went to look at it about an hour later there appeared to be some spots drying out. So I wiped on more mineral oil and it started absorbing it. How long will an old board like this take to be done absorbing oil? Pictures are before I started and when it was soaking in the mineral oil.

F’ing people, I swear🤬

Took my grandson out to breakfast in the Vette. I literally park in the corner of the lot there were at least 5 spaces before the next car. I look out and see this damn Lexus has parked right next to me with 4 open spots available😑. WHY?!
