Can anyone recommend some no mess or less mess bird food please?

Hello! I'm very new to bird feeding and would be really grateful for any help please!

I bought a feeding station about 6 weeks ago and within 24 hrs, had plenty of customers. I've counted 12 different types of bird so far and love watching them. And their little ones 😁

Recently, there's been a horrible sludge on the grass under the station, which I think is a mixture of bits of suet blocks and fat balls (following guidance about what to feed this time of year). Everything I put out gets eaten quickly, especially rehydrated worms, but there is still obviously too much bits of suet/ fat balls falling onto the ground.

I've changed to buying fat balls and suet blocks from the supermarket and am now wondering if this is the problem - are they too soft, thus crumbling too easily?

As for the grass, I raked up as much sludge put as I could, then dug up a couple of inches of soil. I'll reseed the area tomorrow and move the feeder to a new spot.

If anyone has any advice or pointers where I'm going wrong I'd really appreciate it. Thank you in advance for 🙂
