I am very sad. I feel that Onimusha is dead.
I know. I'm sure you've heard this before. I just had to put this out there.
Look. I'm sorry. Y'all on this sub seem pretty positive and I don't want to rain on your parade. But this is the place to post this.
I was excited all that time ago, when I saw that first trailer.
I thought, because it was Capcom, I could set aside my typical cynicism. Modern Capcom has made a lot of stuff that seems to demonstrate they can still make games driven by great gameplay, like they did in the past.
DMC5, Monster Hunter, Dragon's Dogma. SF6 of course.
Resident Evil too, from what I understand, has good gameplay even though there are lots of fans that don't like the directions they've gone in.
I guess I felt the need to do a little eulogy. I know now that it's never coming back.
This game has nothing to do with Onimusha's gameplay. Not even in the smallest, most abstract, slightest conceivable way.
People thinking that oldheads are whining about the game not being hard enough are missing the point.
Yes, obviously the game isn't nearly hard enough. My dog's intestines could beat the demo. The real issue is that Onimusha's fundamentals simply are not here. And they can't be last second, added in. They can't just twist the numbers and fix it up.
If this game does well, then it's going to continue in this direction that has nothing to do with the old games. Old fans will be bitter and find it hard to talk to new fans. Idiotic arguments will start and persist forever. The old audience will be done with it, and this series will just be for the new fans.
I've seen this happen a thousand times now.
If it does poorly, then this is the last Onimusha game. The production cost was too great. The suits will see the brand did poorly, and that will be that.
Onimusha is dead. It was dead, remains dead, and will always be dead.
It's happened to yet another of these games that meant something to me, growing up. It's place in history, capstoned with this. Instead of a sincere shot at bringing it back, or reverently leaving it in its grave. Now it's just.....another of these. Another "You just hate new things." game.
I'm probably gonna drink about it.
