Unsure About Sizing Now

I’m fairly new to Allen Edmonds shoes. I bought my first pair a few years ago, the St. John double monk straps. Later I picked up a pair of Dain plain-toe derby boots at Nordstrom Rack. Both are 11.5 D and have fit me well enough.

More recently, I’ve become interested in restoring older AEs and have bought a few pairs on eBay. Last week, though, I bought my first pair in an actual Allen Edmonds store: Randolph 2.0 loafers.

I was surprised when the salesman did not fit me in my usual 11.5 D. Instead, he put me in 10.5 3E. I have bunions, and he said the wider size would put the ball of my foot in the right place and give me room where I need it. I was shocked by how well they fit.

He said this would probably be my size in most Allen Edmonds, with a few exceptions.

I can see how this makes sense for loafers, but I’m wondering how much this translates to other AE models, especially oxfords, derbies, bluchers, boots, etc. My 11.5 D pairs fit okay, but I do have room in the toes.

For those of you with more AE experience, especially across different lasts, would you treat 10.5 3E as my likely AE size going forward, or would you still evaluate each model/last separately? I’d be grateful for any thoughts.
