How do I encourage my beginner artist friend to keep at it? (picture irrelevant to text body)
Ive included a whiteboard drawing I did just because hey, its an art subreddit, not sure if im required to include a drawing with my post but better safe than sorry. Note this is NOT my friend's art, its mine.
So my friend is a completely beginner artist, like "cannot draw a stick figure" beginner, and shes trying to learn how to draw because she really wants to. But she keeps frustrating herself and generally having a negative attitude towards her art and her ability to make it. She has aphantasia and considers this a handicap, and while im not sure if thats true or not (just because you can picture something doesnt mean you have the skills to make it go on the paper yknow?) its a big deal for her and im not gonna ignore what she believes is a genuine limitation.
Im really worried she's going to end up comparing herself with her other artist friends forever and never actually enjoy making her own art. She always tears her own drawings down when she shows them to us. Ive tried complimenting her art and giving her tips but she really seems to be in a constant state of negative self-talk around her art. I actually hesitate to post my own art where she can see it because i dont want to discourage her!
Shes told me shes currently learning how to draw out of spite, to get back at AI for being shitty. I really want to help her develop a positive relationship with the artistic process and i have no idea how I can help her go about that (or if i should!) Is there anyone who was in her shoes once?
Ive been drawing since i was able to hold a crayon, so i really have no reference point for learning the skill from zero and all my tutorials are really for someone who already knows the basics that a lot of artists take for granted (like knowing how to draw a smooth line from point A to point B). Some advice or just stories from people who started from scratch later in life might be helpful. Anything that can help me encourage her or at least just understand her process here.
