What should I do for my college portfolio project for applying to art schools?

Hello!! I’m building up my portfolio to start applying to art colleges this fall. A lot of art colleges recommend including a project within your portfolio and I was wondering what people were doing for theirs? I have a couple ideas, but I’m worried they aren’t exactly what colleges are looking for. For context, I’m hoping to major in illustration to pursue a career in concept art or game illustration. Or illustration for fashion dolls(such as monster high, Barbie etc)

How do you backup your digital work?

I'm starting a comic soon and it would suck quite a bit if I lost my work at some point during the creation. So I wanted to ask you what you do to backup your digital work and what you recommend I should do so I don't end up in a situation where my work is destroyed?

Edit: I use Clip Studio paint to draw and I'm on windows Incase that's important information

What’s a reasonable price for my artwork (never sold any art before)

It’s all done by hand from start to finish so it takes a while to complete. People have been asking me for artwork and want to pay. I don’t wanna overcharge but I also want to make sure I’m getting back what I put in at least. Can you suggest reasonable prices for artwork like this.

I need help

I want to make art as a career, however I know twitter have its algorithm changed several times and now it's grok-based. I just want to know as an artist, do I have to post art every single day? Or can I fill the gaps/days with regular posts? Also does reposts or quotes work/don't work? I'm specifically asking those who have a consistent and decent amount of interaction in their posts.

How to properly learn to draw 2d shapes?

I've been learning how to draw 2D shapes and I'm a bit lost. How many weeks should I spend learning to draw 2D shapes? Should I focus on just drawing circles, squares, and triangles before moving on to more complex shapes like octagons, hexagons, ect? If so, how long should I focus on the basic 3 shapes before moving on to the complex ones?

Wanting to minor in 2d in college, is it worth making a portfolio? Is that a thing

I’ll be a high school senior next year and while I have an idea for what field I wanna go in to I would love to minor in something like studio or 2d. I am completely self taught and have drawn causally off and on since middle school. Looking at my skill level and being super honest is it worth putting together a small portfolio, I mostly do art for online friends so all of it is more “unprofessional” I feel. Is a small portfolio worth it at my skill level or just signing up for classes and scrapping the minor idea ? Would love some honest advice! (Or maybe ideas of what to work on for the portfolio if the answer is yes)

Question about skills

Hi. Im a begginer self taught artist and I have a question that has been bothering me for a while now, but i think i cannot really answer it myself.

Do you believe that a self taught(implying without a formal education) arist can achieve same level of skill as professional formal educated artists?

Sure, i know about great self taught artist like Van Gogh or Ekaterina Medvedeva
But when i take a look at artworks of some modern artists i have a feeling that i may not be able to draw on the same level eventually and that they have something that i wont be able to have.

I`d like to know your opinion!

Here is a Timelapse of me practicing art. How do I practice even more?

I just drew things like triangles, circles, and lines. And practiced coloring. What else can I practice?

Advice needed

I have just started drawing again after years of not drawing. The three pics attached are the ones I have done in the last month or so. I am trying to find my style, clearly I have a lot of areas to improve, eyes are especially a weakness. I do a lot of charcoal, with small pops of colour, because this is what I have to hand. I don’t really know what direction to go in. I am not trying to make money from art, I just love drawing. I would love to get some meaningful input to help me understand my style and how to improve, which mediums would be good or anything really?

Does using bases count as tracing?

So as a lot of you may know, it’s artfight season. So, I have been doing a lot of attacks to keep up. But for most of my drawings, I’ve been using bases as references to help me. Basically I grab my character refrence, find a good base/pose I want, and import the base, lower opacity, and start drawing. Yo clarify, I don’t trace the base line for line, I use it as guidelines basically. But I’m still unsure if this counts as tracing or not.

Is this okay?

I wanted to commission an artist I love, but their commissions are closed atm and they don't have any info about it on their page, despite being a pretty big artist especially on instagram and x (about 50k followers).

Just out of curiosity, is it okay to dm them and ask about their prices? I just want to know if I can afford it in the future when they open them again😭
