I suspect an artist is scamming people. What can I do?

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place to post about it, but a couple of weeks ago I went to a steam rally, and there was an art stall selling supposedly original artwork in the style of pointillism. The quality looked AI to me, and when I got home, I looked at their website and sure enough, I saw signs of AI. This is the website.

Some of it is subtle, but there are ones that have the typical AI mushy text or even details. There are clock faces that have nonsensical numbers or symbols on them, sometimes even having more numbers or fewer numbers. One image even has a bow with 3 loops. Then there is just that AI quality or vibe. I can't describe it, but MidJourney images really have the vibe I'm on about.

Is there any way I can confirm it's AI, and if it is, what can be done about it?

Is this a scam?

So my sister in law is a V-tuber and she’s hosted two art contests across all her socials. One for Valentine’s Day and one for Christmas. Her requirements for both were for the art to be fully colored, full body (two bodies, one for her character and one for her hubby’s for valentines) and full background. For both she had offered the winner a $35 Amazon gift card. The losers received nothing.

For the first one on Christmas she had received 9 submissions. Me and a few other people who have done and received commissions worked together and set reasonable prices for each of the artworks and the total cost of all the submissions for this contest was $360. The winning piece we agreed would be worth around $65-$70 (as it was fully colored, full body and a completely hand drawn background with high visible skill.) The artist had mentioned when submitting it that it took them the entire week deadline to finish it. They were only paid $35.

For the second contest the rules and prize was the same. This time around she received 10 pieces all with considerably more skill involved than the last so the full price of all the art submitted was estimated to be around $740. The winning piece was worth around a whopping $110-$125, no doubt about it as it was fully colored, had a hand drawn background, had 1 full body, 2 full chibi bodies, and 7 bust drawings of her and her husband’s characters in the piece with HIGH skill involved. Again she only paid the winner $35.

She is still sharing and using ALL of the art from both contests to boost and advertise her V-tubing channel without compensating the artists involved and for the ones she DID compensate she didn’t do it adequately. She had a habit of doing this, using people for free labor (she had done the same to me with her wedding. I did 50 cupcakes, built the RSVP & invitation website, decorated 50 bubble wands and did her makeup because she had mentioned she would pay me. She didn’t even credit or pay me.) She’s even asking our brother in law to make her a furry tail as a favor, again, not discussing payment at all. I WOULD show you the art but this would effectively doxx both her and me and I don’t want her to start getting a wave of hate and I want to stay as incog as I can on this. Would you guys consider this a scam?

How do I encourage my beginner artist friend to keep at it? (picture irrelevant to text body)

Ive included a whiteboard drawing I did just because hey, its an art subreddit, not sure if im required to include a drawing with my post but better safe than sorry. Note this is NOT my friend's art, its mine.

So my friend is a completely beginner artist, like "cannot draw a stick figure" beginner, and shes trying to learn how to draw because she really wants to. But she keeps frustrating herself and generally having a negative attitude towards her art and her ability to make it. She has aphantasia and considers this a handicap, and while im not sure if thats true or not (just because you can picture something doesnt mean you have the skills to make it go on the paper yknow?) its a big deal for her and im not gonna ignore what she believes is a genuine limitation.

Im really worried she's going to end up comparing herself with her other artist friends forever and never actually enjoy making her own art. She always tears her own drawings down when she shows them to us. Ive tried complimenting her art and giving her tips but she really seems to be in a constant state of negative self-talk around her art. I actually hesitate to post my own art where she can see it because i dont want to discourage her!

Shes told me shes currently learning how to draw out of spite, to get back at AI for being shitty. I really want to help her develop a positive relationship with the artistic process and i have no idea how I can help her go about that (or if i should!) Is there anyone who was in her shoes once?

Ive been drawing since i was able to hold a crayon, so i really have no reference point for learning the skill from zero and all my tutorials are really for someone who already knows the basics that a lot of artists take for granted (like knowing how to draw a smooth line from point A to point B). Some advice or just stories from people who started from scratch later in life might be helpful. Anything that can help me encourage her or at least just understand her process here.

Hey, I'm wondering which subreddit would be best to post my art on

I've been looking for subreddits to post my digital artworks in (the ones that aren't just of my ocs) but the ones I've seen so far have very strict rules and I'm always worried about breaking them by accident. I'm also hesitant to post in any of them since my works aren't really professional, like in the digital art subreddit, there are a bunch of hyper realistic artworks and I just think my works wouldn't fit there 😔

Watercolor tape options

I have a school project were we're allowed to use any mediums and I'm using watercolor. Ive been using watercolor for a bit, but my paper keeps on buckling. Ive seen videos on how to stretch the paper, but most use "gummed Kraft tape" which I don't have. Is there any alternatives that I can use? I only have drafting tape and don't have the much to buy a good brand.

What paper feeling screen protector should i get for ipad air and apple pencil pro? Or are they bad?

Hi everyone, I am getting an Ipad M4 Air with 13'' and Apple Pencil Pro. I don't want to end up with scratches after a month of using so I want some kind of protection on the screen. Some people use paper-feel protectors but I heard they are harsh on the nib of the pencil and it wears it off a lot quickly. Also I hear it causes jittery lines especially diagonally. Does anyone recommend them? If so what brand or type? I found Bellemond and ESR but i dont know if they are alright. Also do i need to change the nib to other types as well? Does it cause much loss in screen feel, colors or blur? I am unfamiliar with pencil and protector stuff I am grateful for any kind of help.

Someone tagged the face of my painting with their logo

I (f25) sold a painting to a family friend (m40 something) about 3 years ago. He is an artist, too, and posted a process video of his work on his Instagram story. My painting was hanging in the background, and at first I was happy to see it but I quickly realized that he tagged the bottom right corner with his logo. It is about 4 sq inches big and very clear on the face of my painting :( My jaw actually dropped. I usually don’t sign the face of my work (I’ll sign the back; I think it takes away from the work) but now I don’t think I’ll ever sell a piece again without doing it because of this.

I’m unsure what to do… I replied to the story and said that it was nice to see the piece but I had to ask why he decided to tag it with his logo. This was earlier today and I no response but he’s posted on his story. …

This is really weird and morally wrong af right? I have felt some type of way about it all day and have confided in some people but have gotten mixed reviews. I want to go rip it off his wall and take it back. It actually makes me really sad and uncomfortable because is he trying to claim it as his work? What employed him to do that as a fellow artist? My family has paintings of his hanging in our house, what if I planted my signature on one of those???

I’d love some opinions from other artists bc majority of people in my life aren’t so I’m not sure that they understand why this is a big deal to me… am I over reacting?

Is this considered an improvement in my drawing level?

There are nine months between these two drawings. Do you think I’ve improved? Any tips for improving my digital drawing and coloring, or any mistakes I should avoid to level up my skills?

Trying to choose a tablet for digital drawing, please help

Hi everyone! I want to buy a tablet for digital drawing but I can't decide. I am mostly traditional, previously did a bit of digital art using Krita on my pc. I'm trying to decide between a Samsung Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra 12/512 GB  and 13-inch iPad Air Wi‑Fi 512GB with Apple Pencil Pro. What’s making the decision difficult is that the prices are pretty similar where I live. Both are great in terms of hardware so my concerns are more about user experience.

My current setup:

  • Samsung phone (23 Ultra)
  • Windows PC
  • No other Apple devices

Main usage for tablet:

  • drawing/animation
  • note taking
  • media consumption
  • maybe some light productivity/multitasking

Pros/cons for iPad Air:

  • (+) Procreate and Paper apps
  • (+) People constantly saying iPads are the best for artists
  • (-) People say file management is really annoying
  • (-) Storage problems
  • (-) In long term performance/battery life decreases
  • (-) Only 60Hz screen refresh rate
  • (-) I don't have any apple device, so compatibility is sus, plus UI is unfamiliar to me

Pros/cons for the Tab S11 Ultra:

  • (+) huge AMOLED 120Hz display
  • (+) better multitasking/file management
  • (+) seems to fit my Samsung + Windows ecosystem better
  • (+) feels like much better hardware value overall
  • (+) more durable compared to apple
  • (-) Drawing apps are not on the same level as Procreate

One thing I’m especially worried about is the iPad Air being only 60Hz. My phone is already 120Hz, so I’m not sure if the iPad would feel less smooth or bother me long-term.

I’ve also seen multiple posts from people who bought an iPad then returned it for a Samsung tablet later, so now I’m even more uncertain. I heard Krita works well on Samsung tablets so I don't think I would be unhappy with a Samsung one but i don't want to regret not trying Ipad either. I saw some people saying Procreate is overrated, great for beginners but does not offer same level as some other apps to more professional works. Procreate is basically the main reason I am considering an Ipad so I don't want to be disappointed after making a huge purchase.

For people who might have experience with both or just have knowledge about them:

  • Did the 60Hz on the iPad Air bother you?
  • Is Procreate really great as some people says? Does it have negative/lacking features?
  • Which one felt better for long-term daily use?
  • If you already had a Windows + Android setup, did the iPad ecosystem mismatch become annoying?
  • What is your experiences with apple pencil?

I’d really appreciate honest experiences rather than “Apple vs Samsung” fanboy takes. Also is 512GB too much for art purposes? I was originally thinking 256GB but I don't know if it is enough.

How much should I actually be worried about posting art with Ai around?

I want to start posting my art, drawn and painted by me. Without the use of AI. But, I am a bit curious, what are the chances of people saying I use AI?

I've been out of the drawing game for a while now, and I guess I'm sort of curious what's it like posting art? Do I need to protect it from AI scalping bots? Do I need to post og sketches of what I made so I don't get convicted of AI?

Help me choose five works for my portfolio.

I'm applying to the Integrated Design program at the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK Bremen) and need to submit 5 artworks for the entrance exam.
The school states that they evaluate perceptiveness, imagination, presentation skills, and the ability to reflect and select. They want to see whether applicants can identify problems, narrow them down individually, think in a goal-oriented way, develop creative solutions, and present their ideas clearly.
I attached around 20 art pieces and studies. Based on these criteria, which 5 pieces would you choose?

Small artists- how are you actually getting your work seen/sold these days?

I’m looking for genuine advice from other artists. Aside from doing markets and local shows, what’s actually been working for you when it comes to selling your art and finding buyers?

I had to put my art on the back burner for a while due to some unfortunate life events, and now I’m trying to get back into it. I have pieces I really need to sell, but I honestly haven’t had much luck getting them in front of people. I constantly post them on fb marketplace and I get sells every now and then but I need something more consistent.

I’ve also tried displaying my art in local businesses before and unfortunately got burned pretty badly by a couple situations.. damaged pieces and lost artwork totaling in the thousands, so I’m honestly hesitant to go that route again unless there are better ways to protect yourself as an artist. I know companies would likely not want to be held liable for one’s art on display.

How are you advertising your work these days? Are any of you doing paid ads, and if so, on what platforms? I’ve heard mixed things about paying to boost posts on Instagram and Facebook, so I’m curious if it’s actually worth it or if there are better ways to grow organically.

Would really appreciate hearing what’s worked (or hasn’t worked) for other small artists. 🧑‍🎨

Is creative drive souly based off emotions or is it somthing else?

So, what is creative drive? How do yall make somthing out of nothing? My mediums are writing and photography, however I struggle to actually create somthing without being in distress or pouring my emotions out into the page. Ive tried to sit down and create or go outside and take photos when im not in that exact mood and it feels disingenuous. Any tips for this sort of thing?
