Life Moves On
The year was 2006 to 2010, I remember the fun days of childhood. From not wanting to go to school to spending time with my cousins at my grandmothers house. Thinking back, I can help but feel a flood of emotions fill me.
I'd always love playing with my cousins and my brother, they were the closest to me than any friend could ever be. Pokemon, Beyblades, Duel Master cards, we played them all.
My grandparents were just amazing people. My moms mom would cook delicious food that I still crave till this date while my moms dad would tell us funny stories or be our very own mechanic, fixing our bikes or beyblades... we nicknamed him 'Kenny', IYKYK. My dads parents on the otherhand were a different kind of fun, especially my dad's dad. He was extremely fond of me and I was his favourite grandson. He was a retired computer engineer with an amazing brain for general knowledge, so random quizes from him were expected, with a treat for every answer I got right. He was the reason I got so interested in tech at a very young age, from telling me stories about a super big computer that filled a room to how we were related to someone from the British Army.
This just grew when my dad brought home a new Nokia 6600. I was awestruck. I've never seen something so tiny be able to play videos, take pictures, play songs and more. I would play on that phone whenever my dad was home. I wanted a small device of my own and had this dream that I'm sure we all had that one day when I grow up I'll buy the same phone.
Nokia had a lot of ads playing whenever they released a new phone which seemed like everyday and one particular phone caught my eye. The N91. It was weirdly shaped but had the slider keypad design which I rememeber seeing my dad with. Oh yeah I didn't mention that he used another nokia earlier with a slider keypad just like the N91 and had an inbuilt ringtone of 'Swan Lake'. This would also become one of my favourite compositions.
It was an ordinary day and I was heading back to my grandmas house after school because I'd always go there after and then head on home with my brother. I got off the bus as usual and just glanced around before i crossed the road, hoping to see a vendor selling snacks that I could maybe buy after saving my pocket money for the day. I look to my left and see this big Nokia store and in the window stood this huge display of the Nokia N91. It was as if, fate was telling me, "you're gonna buy this phone one day". I was young and dumb back then so the idea of this phone not being there anymore didn't even pop into my mind.
Everyday I got off of the bus from school I would look at that store window. The phone staring at me. I fell in love with that specific device. I promised myself that I would buy that phone after school when i saved enough pocket money. So day after day I would try to save every little bit of pocket money I could. Inching towards the cost of that phone. To be honest, the amount I was saving, I would be able to buy that after 6 years; but I never lost hope.
As the days came and went, that display was taken down and replaced with a newer model, but I was adamant to buy the N91. One day i got off of the bus just to look at the store and all my hopes came crashing down when I saw that it was an empty window, no poster, no people, no Nokia board. Nokia was going out of business.
During this time my parents bought me a nokia phone, the 5300 and I absolutely adored that phone. Dad still has it at his house, doesn't work anymore but it served me well. I used it so much that I even bough a spare battery for travel and emergency. It was so advanced for its time but my longing always went back to the N91. The phone I could never have.
It's 2026 now and I have an iPhone. But some desires never die and even though we know we can never have it, we do still miss it.
This is true for everything in life. We never truly get what we want, but the moral here is to love the things we have now for me way not have them in the future.
P.S. This is not about a phone IYKYK
This might be my only post here, it may never be found, but if it does, I want to leave you with a small message. Love the people you have now, family, friends, even your pets, for tomorrow always brings change.
