Moving to US with car and personal stuff - checklist, things to do, anything to do at border ?

Hello all,

TN approved, had to come back to Toronto for last week at Canadian company. I will be heading back to US, driving with some stuff in car.

  1. My car is Ontario registered - the plan is to register in the state after few days. Is this going to be ok or any issues with this plan ?

  2. Insurance - currently with TD GrandTouring which covers US travel. I think this will need to be changed to US insurance after car's registration is done ?

  3. Stuff I will be bringing - clothes & books (in boxes), and TV. Since this is all my personal stuff, would there be any taxes or fees required to be paid at the border when crossing into US?

  4. At border crossing when asked, I will mention that I am going on TN, and carrying personal stuff. Generally is there any secondary inspection for carrying personal stuff ?

  5. Is there a checklist to follow, if so, does anyone have it that they can share. Will be of immense help.!

  6. Anything else that I should be aware of when carrying personal stuff in car and crossing border ?

Thank you.!

New job in Colorado — how to think about % to invest vs. living expenses for a family of 4?

Hi all, I'm new to investing — haven't really done it before since past income only covered day-to-day living. I'm starting a new job soon with a $115k annual income in Colorado.

We're a family of 4 renting an apartment/townhouse in the Denver area (rent is a 2k a month). I'd like to understand:

  • What's a general rule of thumb for what % of income should go toward retirement/investing accounts?
  • Should that % be based on gross or net (after-tax) income?
  • Realistically, does this level of income leave "breathing room" for a family of 4 to live comfortably, invest for retirement, and still see monthly savings grow — or is that too optimistic without more budgeting detail?

Any personal experience with a similar income/family size in a similar cost-of-living area would be super helpful. Thanks!

Date on Offer Letter vs Date on Support Letter

Hello all.

I have an offer letter from a company, the offer letter states start date of 26-June. But because I needed a week's extension, I requested that the start be extended to 06-July. The company agreed, and provided support letter that states that I will be starting on 06-July.

  1. Do I need to carry Offer letter for TN interview, or is only Support letter enough ?

  2. Do the start dates on the 2 letters need to match ?

I can ask the company to update and resend the offer letter, but I also do not want to come across as asking too much even before I start working there.

First time as TN applicant - Manufacturing Process Engineer. Need some advice

Hey everyone! I am preparing for my TN interview and plan to go to Detroit Tunnel border crossing. I'm a Manufacturing Process Engineer with a Master's in the same field, heading to a new role in Colorado. Have a few questions:

  1. Does Detroit Tunnel accept walk-in TN interviews? Or do I need to schedule in advance?

  2. Do I have the right documents?
    Planning to bring:
    - Offer letter + Support letter from U.S. employer (printed, not wet ink)
    - Employment verification letters from past jobs - all same field and title (some letters are 6–7 years old)
    - Master's Transcript + Diploma
    - Resume
    - Passport
Anything missing? Do I need a DS-160 or any other forms?

  3. Printed email letters — are they acceptable? My offer and support letters were emailed. I'll print them, but I've heard some CBP officers prefer wet-ink signed letters. Is printing sufficient, or should I request wet-ink copies?

  4. Brief U.S. visit before my start date. I plan to attend my TN interview 10 days before my start date, drop off some belongings in Colorado, then return to Canada to finish my last week of work. Would that be ok ?

  5. The 10-Day Rule vs. 2-Week Notice — how did you handle this? Before finding out about the 10 day rule, I had originally planned to get TN approval first, then give 2 week notice at job. But the 10-day rule means I'd need to resign before my interview — which feels risky if something goes wrong at the border. Has anyone dealt with this? What's the safest approach?
