Tire toolkit
Hi! I’m still a pretty new rider. I started out with a tubeless bike and set myself up with some decent options to repair small punctures and refill a tire. I’ve had a good bit of experience with tubeless bicycles and was comfortable with the tools and procedures.
That bike didn’t agree with me, and this spring I traded it in for a new-old-stock 2024 T100. I love this thing. I’ve ridden more miles on this in four months than I did in almost two years on the one it replaced! I did have an unfriendly experience a year into owning that first bike, though, where a large drill bit decided to impale the rear tire about a mile from home. I couldn’t get enough purchase on it to pull it out to use the patch material I had. I ended up calling my dear wife for a ride home to get my utility trailer and took the bike to the local dealer to have them replace the tire and inspect the rim. That experience informed a decision to get a better set of pliers into the toolkit.
So now I’m on a tubed bike. In many years of riding bicycles, my tubed bicycle tool kit always had a spare tube and a set of compact (plastic) tire levers. I’m thinking that carrying a spare tube doesn’t make a ton of sense here, as I’d imagine they’re not all that compact, and I’d need two sizes. I think perhaps a tube patch kit makes sense. Anything larger than I can patch probably indicates that I’d need a new tire to continue safely anyway. But what about tire levers/irons? I try to keep the kit compact, but realize I probably need a decent amount of force potential here. Also, do I need any special tools to remove the wheels? I just subscribed to the service manual for a little while to capture procedures I might need or want to reference, but the “mobile” options are usually not discussed.
