Cars on stages

Cars on stages

I live near the Theater District but have gone for very long stretches without seeing any theater - mainly for financial reasons. But I’ve had a decent stretch of employment recently and have reconnected with my love of theater by seeing lots of theater in the past few months. From Ragtime to Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock Live.

I recently saw “Death of a Salesman” and reflected on how many (prop) cars I’ve seen on stages in the past few months. “KenRex” did an excellent job suggesting a car just using headlights and smoke machines. “The Outsiders” and “Maybe Happy Ending” feature vehicles prominently. (“The Lost Boys” has motorcycles and some excellent stagecraft but does it have a car? I forget)

I missed “Back to the Future”. Any favorite depictions of cars on stages?

Widow’s Bay fans- “What is she wearing on her head…?!”

This head piece just reminded me of Patricia from Widow’s Bay.

Ragtime is sensational

I searched "Ragtime" on this subreddit and immediately found the contrarian posts of people who disliked this acclaimed show.

I live very close to the Theater District but admittedly can go for very long stretches without seeing any live theater. Part of it is a money thing, but I'm doing well enough this year that I've been trying to see more shows. This year, I've seen CHESS (which I'd read mixed things about but I always was curious about it -- and the show has some amazing things in it), Hadestown (lovely), The Lost Boys (very cool, remarkable stagecraft). And yesterday, I saw "Ragtime" -- which is the kind of big, ambitious musical I've been wanting to see.

I've read some of the criticisms and can appreciate some of them. But as a whole, i was so thoroughly impressed by this. I'm a fan of the Milos Forman film from the early 80s -- wasn't aware this musical adaptation originally debuted in the late 90s. (Film has always been my first love, and it's one of the reasons that new theater is not always on my radar.)

This musical revival is getting plenty of recognition, certainly doesn't need my endorsement. I was moved by it -- the story, the music, the staging, the performances.

I've got tickets to Every Brilliant Thing and Rocky Horror coming up, but I'm inspired enough by what I've seen so far that I'm sure I'll be seeing more shows after that. You see a show you really like and it makes you want to see more shows.
