The Destroyer LA [$$$$]

The Destroyer LA [$$$$]

Lowk i think this might have been the best breakfast food I've had in LA. Great salads, fruits, pastries and breads.

  1. The blueberries were extremely juicy and the yogurt under them is perfect, not too tart, neither too sweet. There are also bits of licorice bark (?) in them that were absolutely amazing. I'm not sure what the smaller purple spheres were, but they were fruity and jelly like.

Blueberries

This was the chickpea salad. A delight to the eyes. The thing on top is a crispy cheese thing that was amazing. The chickpeas themselves sit in a base of tomato, bell peppers, onions and tangy spices - very flavorful. A huge win. There's also a chickpea patty like thing called a panisse that was delectable. The panisse was flavored, and tasted lightly salty, light and bready.

Chickpea panisse salad

The french toast was a standout dish. Now you might ask me how it's possible that a simple french toast could warrant special mention but it was so light, not that sweet (i think the bread was sourdough), the marmalade it was served with was delightful! I think it was peaches. and the mix between crisp edge and soft center was perfect.

French toast

This was possibly my favorite savory breakfast dish I've had thus far. It had gruyère and oats topped with puffed rice. Each spoonfull was so warm and comforting. The bottom of the bowl had black garlic which added a saltiness to it, but with very mild flavor. The herb on top and the warm oats + gruyère was unbeatable.

Black garlic and oats

The rye was good. Hints of chocolate which made me think that the color was from cocoa. The nuts were great - neither too soggy nor crisp. The jam it came with was a little strong. This dish packed a ton of weight for a simple bread service - was much heavier than i imagined.

Rye

This avocado confit with stracciatella was also very good and fantastic over the bread. there was a massive avocado under what you see and was strong and bursting with flavor. The salad was a little difficult to mix given that each ingredient was heavy, but tasted amazing nonetheless.

Avo confit

The coffee had rose water in it which I really liked. The coffee itself was ok - a little bitter for my taste. But the rose water came through and was pleasant. The coffee wasn't as sweet as one would imagine.

cardamom cloud latte

This almond croissant was a little dry. I wish there was more frangipane. The croissant was crispy nonetheless and i would get it again.

Veggie grill

They say you are what you eat so I guess I’m a dry brown bunned patty with a tiny pickle and no sauce.

Weekend soda

This might be a new one for this community. Sweetened with sweet protein (no sugar).

L-R: green apple, cherry cola, orange cream and pina colada.

Green apple sodas are a lost art and I love the candy in a drink. I also feel like pina coladas in a soda are an untapped market.

Personally I like the green apple, orange dream and pina colada.

Another one for the Sprecher fans

This one was a little lighter than I liked - I felt like it lacked flavor a little. I also felt like it was sweeter than it needed to be and flatter than it needed to be. I prefer it to bundaberg which is too flat (but has stronger flavor) and seagrams (which has too much fizz) but I’m sure I’ve had better ginger ales, just trying to remember where. Also 94% DV of total sugar didn’t do me any favors.

Sprecher Orange Dream

Lighter orange cream soda. Has honey in it you can really taste. The only thing i didn't like was that it's 117% of my DV of Total sugars. You can't really taste the sugar so it's deceptive.

Aplós chilli marg

Hi gang first post wanted to review this Aplós chili marg I know it’s not a soda it’s more of a canned mock but I’ve never found a cucumber flavored soda before and it kinda bangs. You can feel the nootropics and the first sip is kinda jarring but it grows on you.

Hot take the deserts from quarter sheets are overrated

Pie is ok - just not used to paying $15 for a slice of (par) cheesecake

edit for the people that think I'm lazy - completely reasonable, here's my full review

from memory, the sweetness was good, i wish the cake i got (pictured here) had more complexity - what i got here just tasted like sweet cream, oreo and strawberry + syrup which didn't feel special. The princess cake's cake itself was dry, and the frosting was overwhelmingly sweet with almond essence with few other notes. the presentation of the cake itself also made it less amenable to eating the cake with the frosting and I ended up eating mouthfuls of either dry cake or thick (which i liked mind you) frosting. I think i would have also liked the temp of both deserts to be slightly colder.

Sato Ramen house [$$]

Notes: Interesting choice for a restaurant to be permanently nighttime inside. I felt like the spot could use a little more natural light. I went at 1 pm and the darkness inside made me feel instantly tired.

Anyways a friend once told me that silken tofu is the best tofu and I usually disagree, except here. The place’s cold tofu was not silken and def should’ve been. I was biting into thicc chalky block of soy. The dressing on it tho was ma la and blew my palettes top off. The dry ramen was really good. A little low on quantity but the fried tofu in sweet sour sauce was excellent with. The miso soup was mid I can’t believe they charged me $1.5 for an extra cup.

Prime pizza [$]

Good pizza. Is it goat pizza? No, it’s vegetarian. Crispy undercrust, airy crust, solid sauce. Solid cheeses. Could taste all the cheeses. Their buffalo side was robust and spicy. The vodka sauce was thicc. I didn’t like that they baked their basil in but maybe that’s personal.

Nine and Nine kitchen [$$]

I like their thai curries but recently had their tofu in gravy. A bit bland - their gravy is just soy sauce, MSG, water and cornstarch. Wish they did something creative like miso, ground edamame or fermented soybean base. I still felt hungry even though this was quite a bit of food, i think the MSG just triggered more hunger in me.

Hello gang, my name is Surya, I'm a south indian living in Pasadena. I have a leaning towards south Indian cuisine - it's heavy on coconut, tamarind, rice and different from north indian cuisine which is more into tomato and protein. There's also a significant vegetarian variety of stews, dals and rices in south indian cuisine. I went to Mayura and had their Navaa curry and I still dream about it, and wanted to plug it for the community.

Here is a picture of their thali, which I had there (I got the Navaa curry to go, and don't have a picture)

https://preview.redd.it/qqjrqqq4zuxg1.png?width=1024&format=png&auto=webp&s=3a8f3d5a8093922a723aa1021a93c8e344bf1a7c

The curries in the thali were good - not exceptional. The navaa curry was exceptional- it's most similar to a thai massaman curry. The way it differs from the thai curry is in that it's lighter (spices less roasted), richer (has more coconut oils), mildly sweet from the coconut, and lighter on acidic notes like lemongrass. Hope you guys try it!

I also have a little travelouge of my visit - here if you'd like to read it.

Would love to know if you guys like it too!
