The one thing that gets buy-side candidates cut before the technical round even starts
Been through a few recruiting cycles and spoken with people on the hiring side at PE shops, HFs, and family offices. One thing I've noticed: most candidates don't get eliminated in the technical round—they're often out within the first few minutes.
A few unwritten rules:
- Your "why" needs to be specific. "Passionate about finance and markets" won't cut it. Have a clear view on a deal, sector, or business model and be able to defend it.
- Your resume should read like outcomes, not responsibilities. Quantify impact. "Built a model that informed a go/no-go decision" is stronger than "supported financial modeling."
- Fit matters more than people admit. Technicals are table stakes. Teams hire people they can work with during long, stressful weeks—be coachable, curious, and low ego.
- Don't lead with comp. Let recruiters or the process bring it up. Raising it too early can send the wrong signal.
What's the biggest unwritten rule you learned during PE/HF/VC recruiting that nobody told you upfront?
Where Are You Guys Turning Up This Weekend?
Siku izi events na clubs ni mingi mpaka mtu hujui uende gani, and age is catching up mpaka we cant club hop like we would back then.
Mko wapi leo Friday ama hii weekend tuwa join ama tuwa avoid?
Nilipiga break hii mambo ya kukata waters, and now I have loads of time on Sato and Sundays with nothing much to do. I know of the hiking, friend group, gym alternatives that could make good use of this time, but I need some proposals that don't require stepping out and require high commitment.(after a week of pressure, weekends need to be easy yeah)
I bought an adult painting book, and its what I've been on (plus catching up on bikozulu's blog and books)
So I ask, wenye weekends huwa indoors, kama hii weekend umedu?
