How long are we supposed to live in 1960?

An update on our previous post about the 6 PM entry timing for girls at GBPUAT, Pantnagar.

Around 16–17 girls went to meet the VC to put forward our concerns. We weren't there to argue—we genuinely wanted a solution.

We were told that the VC didn't make this rule and that it comes under the DSW Committee. When we raised the issue of winter evenings and the fact that it gets dark so early, we were told, “Don't debate with me. I've already given you the answer.”

The “solution” was that extensions would be available for valid reasons. But why should we need an extension for every basic necessity after 6 PM?

Food. Stationery. Medicines. Academic requirements. Even small everyday needs.

Things don't stop existing at 6 PM.

Our schedule already runs from 8 AM to 5 PM, sometimes with extra classes from 5–6. We have practicals, assignments, societies, university events and endless responsibilities. And after 6 PM, we're expected to simply return to our rooms.

The VC also said that personally, he would prefer no entry timings, but changing the existing mindset takes time because “this is how things have been in Pantnagar.”

We understand that change takes time. But students are facing the problem today.

We've already sent a letter to the DSW. We've already raised the issue. We've already met the VC.

So what are we supposed to do now?

This isn't about wanting to “roam around freely.” It's about basic autonomy, practical rules and being trusted as adults. If safety is the concern, improve security, lighting and accountability—not just restrictions.

New students will keep coming. New generations will keep asking the same questions.

If the answer is always “this is how it has always been,” then when will anything ever change?

GBPUAT is in 2026. Why are girls still expected to live in 1960?

GBPUAT — Why are we living by 1960 rules in 2026?

Girls have a 6 PM entry restriction, while boys can stay out until 10 PM. Why this discrimination?

Why are girls expected to restrict their clothes, movements, and freedom instead of holding accountable those who harass them?

If residential people are harassing girls, then why are the girls being restricted? Why not take strict action against the people responsible? Why should our freedom be the price of someone else’s behaviour?

We came to a reputed university to study, grow, and experience college life — not to live under restrictions that treat girls as if they cannot make decisions for themselves.

This university runs on our fees and the contributions of its students and families. We deserve to be heard.

Safety should mean accountability — not controlling girls.

Equality should not be a privilege.

And 1960’s thinking should stay in 1960.

GBPUAT, listen to your students. We deserve better.
