Relocating from New England to Detroit

Hello!

Husband and I in our mid-40s are planning on relocating to Detroit (where he was born and raised but left 30 years ago) by the end of the year, ideally sooner. We're currently in rural VT and are really excited to be back in a city, but we've been out here in the sticks for close to a decade, so a little rusty with both big moves and city life.

We have two pitbulls who are used to having an acre of secluded land to run around in, and they're not the biggest fans of leash walking, so we do need a secure yard space, but certainly not a whole acre.

What's the consensus on pitbulls in Detroit? Is it pretty dog friendly, and are there specific areas we should look as we begin the house hunting process? We'll be buying, not renting, and want something move-in ready, or at the very least habitable as is.

Also, my career is in direct support/social services specifically focused in housing advocacy. What's the job market like in the nonprofit sector? I'd like to be able to line up secure employment and truly hate job hunting. 15-20 years ago I had exclusively worked in costuming and clothing construction, and the body modification industry, but those are not a sustainable industries out here.

He's a jack of all trades, master of some, but does not want to keep swinging a hammer or stand on roofs all day. Our job market here is garbage, how diverse is the job market out there?

What else should a child-free older queer couple be asking about Detroit as we plan this move? Who/what/where about Detroit is important/helpful for us to know?

TIA!
